Mario Wonder is easily the best 2d Mario game since world E on the GBA. I think its praises have all been sung elsewhere and I agree with most of them. While the New Super Games all felt limited by their adherence to NES Mario (despite having level design on par with Wonder), Wonder is willing to draw in more influences from Yoshi Island and the modern kirby games to make a game with more pizzaz thats willing to draw attention to its own design (even if it is a little full of itself like most post Galaxy Mario games). There is a sense of repetition and ennui which lingers in the game with its insistence on making sure you really appreciate its creative stuff by locking said stuff behind easily visible collectibles.

Really despite how good this game is it also shows the limits of 2D Mario. Like Mario is Nintendo's main man yet ever since Mario went 3D it seems his 2D outings get the short end of the stick compared to other Nintendo published platformers. Like Yoshi Island, Wario Land, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and even Rayman legends all just have more interesting art styles, more detailed worlds, more depth, and more gameplay innoation then Wonder which in the end still feels as budget as the New Soup games despite the TLC it has received. The power up and boss situation is also way worse then any of the new soup games somehow.
