Fun game, I think that fans of the real pokemon trading card game probably get more out of this in terms of comprehensibility and enjoying playing it in the first place. There's a lot of unusual or funny stuff with the rules that comes off kind of scuffed if you're familiar with the modern rulesets and the changes that were made for balance purposes.
Not a fan of the pack system's complete randomness- if you need to get a specific card for your deck you'll just need to battle the same trainer over and over again for the packs that contain the card, and even then it could take opening dozens of packs. A way to trade for/acquire specific cards would have been welcome. Maybe this is less of a problem back when the game released and you would have a friend who you could actually trade cards with.
Music rocks btw.
