The expansion to Splatoon 3, Side Order is a rougelite experience that is very much doing its own thing compared to any of the previous campaigns.

Story wise, there isn’t a lot here. Essentially it acts as the opposite to the base games chaos, as the antagonist wants a world of order where everyone loses their own will. Once you stop them there isn’t much else to say, but there are documents to collect which expand on the lore.

The game involves you trying to reach the top floor of a 30f tower and defeat the final boss.

You choose your weapon at the start and as you climb you gain chips which allow you to upgrade yourself, your weapon or your support. Chips are tied to mission difficulties and you get 3 choices per floor. The missions, enemies and the arena are randomised every time, and certain bonus challenges can appear such as the lights being cut, but you cannot change your weapon, so you have to learn to work with what you have. Lose all your lives and you have to start from 1f.

Side order gets chaotic really fast, but your weapons get so OP. It didn’t take me that many attempts to reach the top, but you are encouraged to replay with other weapons.

As someone who doesn’t normally enjoy rougelikes, this was enjoyable, and I beat it with every weapon. I prefer more structured gameplay, but the chaos of this kept me coming back - 8/10
