Alright, so this is not doubt an expertly crafted, cinematic experience but I do think the praise it receives is just a tad overbown.

What it does well, it does REALLY well. This is one of the most mature and gripping storylines I've seen in gaming and the combat is meaty and very satisfying once you've gotten your full arsenal.

Things I think are lacking are the enemy variety, especially in the bosses. This is fixed greatly in the sequel, but I lost count of the number of recolor troll bosses I faced on my path to getting the platinum. Additionally, I'm not sure this game benefits from having an rpg-like loot system. Some of the items are interesting but I honestly found loot more of a chore than anything.

Outside of this I would say the locations are beautifully crafted and the side content is all meaningful for the most part. One optional boss (you'll know who I'm talking about if you've played) put up a daunting challenge that is leagues above any other fight in the game.

As with a lot of Sony's exclusives lately, there is a decent chunk of gameplay that is really just a glorified loading screen as you watch Kratos climb or shimmy his way to the next area. I never cared much for these but it's really a minor annoyance if anything.

Is 2018's God of War a masterpiece? To many, I'm sure it is, but I feel happy seeing it as a flawed but excellently crafted game that has much potential to refine its formula in a sequel.
