Zombie Nation has one of the craziest premises of any shump - already one of the most consistently bonkers video game genres. The bizarre gameplay featuring a giant floating samurai head spitting out eyeballs against a possessed Statue of Liberty helps the game stand out thanks to just how weird it is. Adding to the chaotic nature, Zombie Nation goes absolutely wild with all the debris and enemy projectiles covering the screen. It definitely gets hard to tell what’s going on at times, but the huge health bar keeps the difficulty manageable. One downside is that boss battles get less unique as the game progresses, and it starts to feel like most other space shooters. The final boss in particular is especially anticlimactic with how generic and easy to beat it is. It’s still definitely worth checking out Zombie Nation if you’re even the slightest fan of shoot ‘em ups or quirky NES games.
