The Devil May Cry series is a series I really wanted to get into back in January after I got my PS5 for Christmas and bought 1-5 and started with DMC1 a week later. DMC1 is a bit dated, especially with the camera but it was a very fun and difficult action game that would go on to influence other action games like MGR:R and Bayonetta years later. I then played DMC2 which is straight up on par with the worst Direct-to-DVD Disney sequels where it takes everything that made the original fun and dumbs it down to the point that the guns are the best weapons to use against almost everything, the swords feel like shit to use, and the bosses are literal dogshit like the fish boss or the funny haha infested chopper. It is literally one of the worst games I’ve ever played but I heard good things about DMC3 and I was excited to play it so I played it. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, I takes what worked about DMC1 and even fixes some things from DMC2 and expands upon them with different styles, great level design, fun as hell combat, incredible bosses (mostly), and a great and memorable story with fun cutscenes. It’s literally everything I could have wanted from an action game and more. DMC4 is great as well but its a bit weaker since the bosses aren’t as good (not bad except for that giant statue boss fuck that guy), and you play the game reversed for the second half since the game was unfortunately rushed but it was still a lot of fun and I liked Nero.

Now we get to DMC: Devil May Cry which is genuinely a very stupid title and I'm pretty sure you know why just by looking at it. This game is a reboot of the DMC series since even though DMC4 sold well it somehow didn’t sell well enough so they got Ninja Theory to reboot the series and then this came out in 2013. I played the definitive edition and I heard that the base game is actually worse since it doesn’t have lock on which is actually dumb.

I don’t really like the story all that much considering I don’t care for the characters and the writing sucks. It is just a cookie cutter, annoying, and unsubtle capitalism is bad story.

Now for the gameplay.. Despite my rating it's actually not bad, the gameplay is quite different from the previous games, you have to hold one of the triggers to use another one of the weapons and it does work. It is kind of fun but I don’t like the gameplay as much as 3 and 4 considering how great the combat is in those two. The devil trigger slows down time which is kind of cool but it doesn't last long and all of the enemies get flung up in the air. Also the bosses are kind of mediocre, even though I know this game is for newcomers I do wish the bosses could have been better but I did kind of like the news anchor boss I think that was one of the only parts that I really enjoyed and the Vergol boss fight was fine even though it was a little too easy for me, I know it gets harder on other difficulties but I don’t really care. Overall I would say the gameplay is actually decent and I can tell they actually tried to make a fun game.

I don’t care for the soundtrack, which sucks considering how great the soundtracks for the main series are, none of it is really memorable here. The graphics are fine but I hate Donte’s design. He genuinely looks like shit at least DMC2 has a great outfit which is the only thing that piece of shit does better than this. They remove Vergol’s funny fedora from the definitive edition so that it gets an instant 1/10.

If I’m being honest this is a very conflicting game for me, it's kind of fun but there's a lot going against it. I did play as Vergol for a bit and he doesn’t live up to how he played in DMC 3 and 4 to be honest. Overall, I can see why someone can enjoy this with the definitive edition but it doesn’t really work for me and it doesn't even feel like a real DMC game to me. Maybe one day I’ll come to appreciate this version of the game more if I play on a harder difficulty but for now I don’t really want to play this again at the moment.

At least it's more fun and had more effort put into it then DMC2.
