I think this game struggles to find its identity. It’s largely a walking simulator with some horror elements, but also mostly exploration-focused, which does create a unique tension. The story is engaging (it says something that I wanted to finish this in one sitting!) and pushes you to continue to discover the mysteries of the forest. However, I felt the ending was incredibly anticlimactic which almost sort of took away from the story a bit. I think this game does largely succeed on one major point, and that’s its atmosphere. The different locations you explore are incredibly satisfying and capture your intrigue; the awesome soundtrack helps develop this atmosphere. However, performance issues on the Switch version took this away a bit for me; this isn’t something which I would normally complain about, but several times in my playthrough, the game would stall for about 10 seconds or so without explanation. Overall, Firewatch is a pretty good game, and definitely worth a playthrough if it’s on sale, but nothing too extraordinary; furthermore, I would recommend playing this on something other than the Switch. 5.5/10
