Sitting somewhere between a new game built on Castlevania 64 and a director's cut, Legacy of Darkness is a truly bizarre release. The fact that I'm rating it separately should indicate where I stand on its distinctiveness, but there's a good chunk that is shockingly similar. This déjà vu doesn't last too long however, and all the differences here are to the game's benefit. Relative to Castlevania 64, it's more polished, features set-pieces that are better fleshed out and less finnicky, and manages to keep the action-adventure vibe going into its late-game rather than reverting to pure platforming. It's honestly a pretty good game, rough edges and all. Awesome ending too. Glad they got a second chance with this one, it was worth it.
