The culmination of everything Supergiant has done in Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre. Hades is not the most varied roguelike, not the most replayable, not the craziest or the one with the most content or best combat. Hades, however, is the only roguelike that I feel transcends the arcade-style nature of the genre and becomes something more artful. The way that the story develops in Hades is downright fantastic. The characters are detailed and specific and real (it is Supergiant, after all). The soundtrack, while making some small concessions for the looping nature of the game, matches the quality of the other SG games. The voice acting is TREMENDOUS. The classic Supergiant artstyle is in full effect here. There are not a crazy variety of enemies or items in this game, but the ones there are are so perfectly designed that the gameplay doesn't get old. Hades is a joy to play, and a truly artful achievement. It falls just short of perfect for me because of the slow pace the content unlocks after the main story, and I think the one point where the lack of variety hurts is the small number of zones and bosses. I would love to see a DLC but the heat system mitigates this well, and I think the game is a monumental achievement for an indie studio (or anyone) regardless.
