If you loved Elden Ring, you'll probably love Shadows of the Erdtree too. For me, this expansion doubles down on all of the aspects of the base game that I didn't enjoy, leaving me feel like I was going through the motions for the majority of the runtime. The scadutree upgrade mechanic is tedious, forcing you to scour a gorgeous but surprisingly-sparse open world until your damage output and resistance are arbitrarily high enough to contend with the enemies that the DLC throws at you. Once your upgrade level is high enough, none of the bosses are terribly challenging, save for the final boss, whose first phase is great but whose second phase is easily one of my least favorite things FromSoftware has ever done, a messy barrage of particle effects and unreadable attacks that is extremely frustrating with some builds, but torn apart by others. Shadows of the Erdtree continues the focus on quantity and spectacle from the base game, which, as a fan of the more restrained experiences in Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, is unfortunately not my thing at all.
