Rift Apart is a game that knows it's acting as one of the few 1st party 'next-gen' showcases, and goes to the max to try and impress by utilizing most of the PS5's capabilities. It certainly does achieve this, looking beautiful and running very consistently throughout the entire game, with a multitude of graphics options to choose from.

I have never played a R&C game before this, and my favorite part was undoubtedly the combat. Its a slightly watered down version of the recent Doom games BUT with a lot more freedom, as it doesn't really matter too much which weapons you use at any given point; I really liked just using whatever I felt like at any given time, spamming support weapons and then unloading with whatever I so pleased. It was a refreshing "video-gamey" type of gameplay that I thoroughly appreciated. The story is about as good as a Mario game or something of the sorts, really nothing memorable, but Rivet was a decent character who I was able to mostly enjoy the dialogue of. I think that the peak of the game for me was Savali, the most open-world styled planet, where you could really do anything you wanted in order before progressing the story. I ended up searching for each of the Lombax Lore pieces and found exploring this area the most fun of anything in the game; I honestly wished there were more segments like this, as once it was over it was back to the linearity that is mostly fine but just not quite as interesting. Overall a really solid game, nothing mind-blowing but a well-constructed visual spectacle with addictive, arcade-y combat.

8/10
