First game from the Recollection down! I never played the original DS game so I don't know how it compares but I enjoyed my time with the remake.
The story and main characters are definitely where the game shines most. The first two chapters are very slow and can come across as boring but it picks up very quickly. Ashley and D are cool characters and the way their stories intertwine while they work to solve the main mysteries makes it all the more engaging.
The puzzles the game hits you with are nothing to write home about but some of them have cool little gimmicks sprinkled in. A few accessibility features are available that make solving the puzzles(the game gives you two hints and will straight up tell you the solution if you want) and navigating the mansion very easy. I personally wouldn't rely entirely on these features as they may cause you to miss some cool story stuff.

@RedBackLoggd No I wouldn’t say so. There’s a few moments where it may feel like that but for majority of the game it’s very calm and slow burning.
But you'd still say it has an engaging mystery?
@RedBackLoggd Yeah, I think the way the game took advantage of its setting and the two main characters’ connection to it(though both of their circumstances being entirely different) made the mystery engaging. I think the reason I don’t consider it a thriller is due to much of the game consisting of walking around the mansion I mentioned in my review, looking at and picking up items that may contain details that relate to the plot, and solving puzzles that you come across. The soundtrack and atmosphere of the mansion isn’t something I would consider fitting under the thriller umbrella.
I worded those last points pretty poorly actually. I think the walking, item pickup, and puzzle solving can be used to make a thriller but the atmosphere and music that’s used in this game while doing all that just didn’t.
