games i literally do not understand the appeal of

i was thinking about star ocean 6 again and i said to myself, "damn. this game is genuine fucking dog shit in so many ways. how could anybody but the most diehard fan like it in any capacity? how does anyone think it's the best one since 2? are they fucking crazy? why do some people enjoy so6 despite them not having prior familiarity with the series?" and i started wondering how many other games i felt that way about

i'm opinionated and vocal, but despite that i also believe i'm pretty grounded and understanding. like, i totally hate smt iv apocalypse, but i know why others would disagree. when i say i don't see the appeal in something, i mean it. if you could enlighten me, please do so

sorry imsaying this about something you gave a good review for: neo twewy

@pkmudkipz what i played of it was fiiiiiiine but that'd probably be me with the mana games if i ever ran them

@apocynadeae that's closer to my feelings on og twewy ngl but i still get why someone would love that game if they're like totally washed by the aesthetics or it's the first game with its kind of narrative that they ever played

(actually i was tempted to put caligula effect here because i played it for 6 hours when the vita version dropped and i hated literally everything about it and saw no redeeming qualities in anything beyond art and music, but i also figured eh, i haven't played it all. maybe the fuckin story or characters stop being complete dog ass at the 8 hour mark!)

yeah i get that, it was the first thing i played like that but ive replayed it countless times to be able to reinforce my love for it and its commitment to its plot is really impressive to me. lowkey feel like neo's an insult to the love i feel for it to such a degree that even the smallest positive i can give to it has like, six or seven asterisks associated with it

@ShineSpark glad it's not just me, not one single aspect of that game was appealing to me

caligula's combat is interesting but I don't think it fits the sheer number of potential battles the game has, having to set up combos for mooks gets old REAL fast

@chandler what other games have narratives like twewy

@axiom the battle system would be interesting if it was remotely wieldy. it takes too long to do anything and i've heard from overdose fans that it's usually quicker and a better idea to just mash the same attack anyway

as for games that have a similar narrative, well, twewy isn't particularly unique in the sense that it's a coming of age story. sure it has a particular drive on culture but the core of its narrative is still about teenagers finding their place in the world. most obvious parallel is persona 3, which i'd say is a hell of a lot stronger across the board anyway

@chandler ehhh re:twewy that's way too general of an overview tbh, neither of those games are similar in narrative. what really stood out to me wrt twewy was the protag learning more about the uniqueness of the world and other people and opening himself up from his dismissive closeminded mentality as a result and shit that is just fucking persona 3, this is why atlus games need to drop silent protags

@axiom i mean, that's basically what i got out of persona 3 as a high schooler except it was more effective because everything else in the game resonated more with me and my experiences. again - these are coming of age games. it's easy to get the same kind of personal significance out of something like mother 3 too. lots of games are about opening up and finding your place in the world lol

and like, while i think neku and shiki are great characters - hell, beat too. and joshua certainly grew on me - twewy has a lot of weak ass characters and sidequests that aren't really memorable or noteworthy. not to mention literally every antagonist sucks ass. and despite the whole pin/swag shit being embedded into the aesthetic, i don't really think it's actually a prominent enough theme to be super standout beyond being gameplay mechanics

ultimately what i came out of that game with was "yeah this would've prolly been personality-changing if i played it when i was more vulnerable", but as an adult i really didn't get that. i think neo has way stronger everything in that regard. it's cringe shit for the cringe generation, but so was twewy back in its day
aye cmon, Sho is great

@nowitsreyntime17 i liked him a lot in neo but i didn't think he was funny at all in the og ngl. randumb club penguin user headed ass
I enjoyed him a lot in og but seeing how hes a party member in neo I wonder how hes changed

@nowitsreyntime17 basically the same thing but he has a personality beyond saying math quips now. if you liked him in the og he's just better in neo
oh nice

sho is cool in neo but honestly i dont think he's that better he's basically the same and just there to fill a space and make twewy fans go ayooo its sho until he dips for most of the game, his role is way more interesting in twewy itself imo

i can't really say i find sho interesting or amusing in any capacity in og

but idk in that regard it makes sense you'd care less about him in neo and i'd like him more
