Another look into kyriu's psyche, I actually considered this one of the more enjoyable yakuza experiences in the series

Man, this game is fucking awesome.

I don't have too much to say honestly other than a lot of the story being kinda filler feeling and not super necessary, but when you get to the final chapter it's just so incredibly good. Like it's gotta be one of my favorite final chapters in any LaD game, it's seriously that good. It had the best twist villain that felt like such a perfect culmination for his character, great supporting cast, and Kiryu was awesome. I think people who wanted Yakuza 6 to be more in line with the rest of the series will find that here in the final chapter. This feels like the prologue to the end of Kazuma Kiryu's story, which I'm hoping Infinite Wealth indeed is even if I have many doubts. The ending had made me cry more than any piece of media since I watched the "I wanna live" scene in One Piece. Kiryu is genuinely one of my favorite characters in fiction and this truly just did him wonders for his character. You can feel the tension and pain he's not allowing himself to feel throughout the entire game, and feel him bottling it up. Then when he starts crying in that final scene I was sobbing the entire time too. I'm genuinely getting teary eyed just thinking about it. I've played every mainline game in the series up to this point, and Yakuza 7 really left me how most others felt with Yakuza 6 (6 being my favorite game in the series) basically that it was a bit too disconnected for me and I wanted more Yakuza DNA in there. However, this game gave me what I wanted. It was perfect in that regard, though one thing I must say is that I cannot imagine this game, and Kiryu's character in it holding really any weight unless you've been there and seen every game with him honestly. This would be a terrible game to start with for the series. But that's fine because it's not supposed to be a new starting point.

Also onto the real negatives of this game. The combat is the worst it's been since Yakuza 3 and that's not a joke. I'm the ichiban (killing myself) Yakuza 3 defender but I know the combat in that game is NOT it. And it's the same with this one. A big problem is how many gun enemies there are. There really shouldn't be any in any modern LaD action game because they just suck ass and the fact that there's more than EVER was terrible. Can't think of too much else to say even though this review sucks, so I'll just do the new LaD ranking for the ones I've played.

Damn I've played a lot of these games. Onto Infinite Wealth and maybe we'll eventually go back to Lost Judgment.

Turok

2015

A childhood classic, revamped and replayed. Revisiting this over 20 years after I first played it was just so pleasant. It's the rare game that stands up to the awe, grit, and challenge I remember. The controls feel better than ever on modern hardware, no longer having to fidget with the N64 controller. Honestly it's a miracle I could figure it out at such a young age. I'm not sure if I ever actually finished it then, the first few levels are so familiar and burned in my mind, but not so much the last half.

It's a singular esoteric experience, just inhabiting it feels dreamlike. The score bumps as you traverse impossible landscapes and architecture as soldiers, dinosaurs, and robots (sometimes combined) rush you from all directions. All of this with an array of satisfying and creative weaponry from your trusty bow all the way to the legendary Chronocepter of which you find a single piece of in each level that is combined just before the end.

All of this to say Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a pure gem, no ugly blemishes or fluff. Nothing on its mind but collecting keys and killing dinos, and I think that's fucking beautiful.
