This is probably my favorite game of all time, But it took a while to really learn to love it.
This game demands a lot of you. The game serves as its own filter. You have to put up with some really cringey anime bullshit. The character designs are really hit or miss. Voice acting starts out rough. The tutorials are some of the worst every put into a video game, going so far as to give complete misinformation at times.

If you won't meet the game at these terms, you aren't going to be very impressed. Emotional story moments are going to miss if you can't get over the character designs or voice acting. Combat will be frustrating if you follow the tutorials and refuse to try it out for yourself. You get filtered out.

But if you are willing to meet the games demands, you will be heavily rewarded. The story will leave you an emotional wreck, and attached to the charming characters. The combat is complex and rewarding, allowing for a fantastic but not overwhelming amount of experimenting. The worldbuilding and lore is fascinating and wraps up just about any questions you could have about the world and story. You let yourself through the filter to the gold underneath.
