yknow this is the one with the greatest groundwork for me . reminiscent of fnaf4 (currently my fav fnaf game) with some spooky bedroom setting and a mentally ill little girl with some kind of heavy PTSD and as i expected it ended up being my fav one in the fnac series . not that weird if you ask me since this is right up my alley but im really sad this didnt end up being a dealbreaker for the series like it was fnaf4 for me
this time around they shook things up quite a bit since gone is the office and the factory setting and you will be sitting in your bedroom trying to fight off these rat cat bodysuit who kinda look extremely kinky idk i have this weird vibe like why are these 2 made for children entertainment they look fucking hideous im not surprised she ended up doing cognitive behavioural therapy so anyway the main gimmick is that when the rat gets in your room you have to shine the flashlight in front of his face in whatever part of the room he is if youre too slow hes gonna get into the room and youll have to shine his face again in order to not get killed and hes gonna get under your bed and youre gonna check in what side of the bed he is so that you can turn around and wait for him to crawl out of the bed so that you can flash him to heaven and back the end
now if this sounds complicated it really is but youll soon get a jist of what you have to do since this is the entire gameplay loop youre gonna do for 5 nights and this is where the achilles heel of the game really rests . its gonna get real monotonous real fast and theres nothing to really shake up the tension after you understand what you have to do . even the implementation of cat into the equation isnt enough to bring the fear up a notch since hes just gonna be a hindrance all night
a nice addition that i though was super cool is the tape recorder that can play some relaxing music if you hit play and its gonna make the night go x2 faster . thats sick af if you ask me really brings some different strategy into the gameplay and sometimes the monsters are gonna fuck with it or even steal it (didnt happen to me but other reviews say its possible source: i trust them)
beside the weird fact that these guys are still trying to tag team the protagonist they do have some cool animation and spooky presence but in the end it wasnt as oppressive or claustrophobic as fnaf4 was for me even tho this one also plays with audio cues and shit like that
subpar gameplay for a really interesting story tho the little yume nikki segments are interesting and im pretty sure you can deeply explore the dreamscape but im too bad at it so my main source of lore was the ending scenes in the rat and cat theatre and that shits interesting af in particular the finale and the real reason this girl is scarred for life
its always interesting to me to see media tackling stuff like psychotherapy because usually they just pretend horror stuff can be dealt with with a "omg another day another slay" but the reality of that is way worse and im glad they implement this kind of storylines sometimes in the stories theyre trying to tell
anyway it was a nice game and possibly my favorite in the series i wish i could love this way more than i do but what can you do
