I finished Cult of the Lamb in 8 (!!) hours without any major difficulty. What saddens me is the fact that Cult of the Lamb is a roguelike game with base building/farming elements taking elements from The Binding of Isaac, Moonlighter and Frostpunk.

Cult of the Lamb's art style is very similar to Darkest Dungeon in a way if that game was a lot cuter. The art itself drawn my attention to the game at first, and after trying it out, I find out that the gameplay loop itself was essentially the mixture of some of my favorites from the genre, thrown together in a very bad way.

The game suffers from a lot of bad design choices, such as the cult aspect feels really tacked on. The game itself consists of 4 different dungeons, protected by ancient gods and their followers, who need to be slain in order for you to progress through the final challenge of the game.

The cute and charming artstyle however hides a very shallow experience with little to no weapon variety, clearly more fleshed out and useful curses (abilities), a lazy perk system (cards, that are obtained randomly or at certain vendors throughout your journey) and the mentioned cult building.

In order to progress, you need to gather cult members who need basic nessessities such as food, sleeping bags and entertainment (faith). If they are well kept, they gave you their life force, which unlock different combat mechanics. They can also worship you, which unlocks different buildings for your cult.

What is wrong with this system is that the whole social sim aspect is not fleshed out at all. Characters have different traits, but they are very paper thin. You can interact with your followers, but they are essentially just power source for you.

The combat on the other hand, can be very chaotic, because the attack indicator is just a little light for the enemies and sometimes the chaotic nature of the fight will guarantee that you will be hit at least once.

The bosses are very easy to beat, they do not have second phases and their deaths are very anti climatic. The game does not feature boss specific weapons or any kind of loot except some cosmetics, which are not that important in my opinion, mainly because you cannot visit the bases of others online. It does not matter how your tiny little cult looks, if you cannot even show it off to others!

All in all, a roguelike to be done in 8 hours is really bad. I have 48 hours in Slay The Spire, one of the best in the genre and I did not even finish that game with all the characters.

For those who seek an entry to this genre and they are more of a casual gamers, buy it! It can be fun for those who seek these elements in games (farming, building, decorating), but anyone who wants anything similar to the previously mentioned games, skip it.
