after two full playtroughs years apart, I think I can say that this is my favorite game. here's all the things that annoy me about it:
many things this game does do not work for me: the open world activities feel pretty stale, and doing most of the gigs was kind of a mistake as they are very simple and light on narrative. I had the intention of finishing all of them but gave up after reaching max level, as I was basically invincible (playing on hard). alot of the sidequests as well seem to always end when they get interesting, leaving me with a unsatisfied feeling, like they could have been way better with a little tweaking.
however, grafted on to a pretty basic and decent open world game is the best narrative and my favorite characters in any video game. this fucking game contains some incredibly personal moments, and if I had a pretentious youtube channel I would make a video called "Cyberpunk 2077 and Intimacy". this game has brought me to the verge of tears multiple times: hanging out with judy on the roof, looking over the bustle of the city after her only close friend commits suicide; watching a movie with rogue in a abandoned drive-in theater , seeing her come to grips with her long lost lover being back in a twisted way; talking to johnny as he understands he's been buried without ceremony in an oil field, and carving his name on a piece of sheet metal to serve as his gravestone. losing your closest friend just when your dreams were becoming reality.
phantom liberty was also great, but I was kind of burnt out and didn't pay enough attention to follow it's pretty convoluted story. some day I will go back and pay proper attention, but for now I am satisfied leaving it as is. the ending my V got seemed very appropriate for the feelings I have for this stellar story and game, and also in a weird way where I am in my life at the moment.
also, it's just fucking fun to play! and for once a game dares to have really loud music during gameplay, putting it on center stage instead of being in the background, and it helps that the soundtrack is incredibly good, jesus christ I love it so much.
can't wait for another game to make me feel like this again, but I think it will be a long time.
