Started this as soon as I beat KH1, and after playing through a couple of hours and finishing the first world, I decided to put it away and watch the game’s cutscenes on YouTube.

I think I reached this decision because I simply wanted to get to KH II already, and having to master a new gameplay mechanic and to go through the same worlds and characters from the previous game just didn’t felt optimal for me. Having to go through 20+ hours and two different campaigns just to go on with this series’ story just didn’t felt right.

Don’t get me wrong when I complain about the gameplay, though: it’s super unique and quite fun to master, and maybe the best aspect of this game’s “game” part, even though you still have to play for HOURS to start feeling remotely powerful enough to face the enemy encounters decently (a problem that came over from KH1). But, to be honest, the main problem for me were the Disney worlds. To begin with, there’s the most apparent issue of them being simply reworked versions from the previous game with no real impact on the game’s main plot, but their execution is simply flawed. Their room structure and how you explore them may have worked better on the original portable version of this game, but in this PS2 remake they just felt like a chore. An extremely boring thing to go through just to get the info you need for understanding the next game’s plot.

Anyway, I still think I’ll come back to this sometime in the future, but for now, watching the cutscenes worked wonders for me. As far as it’s plot goes, it’s FAR better than the first game’s story. Much more interesting in every aspect, even though it brings more questions than answers. It’s simple and very straightforward, but still important. I think that people skipping on this one is what gave Kingdom Hearts the fame of being such a confusing franchise.
