Nov 2023: This Month's Games

a public journal of everything i've played this month. lotta basketball on this one

any notes should be treated as "first impressions"

Project Zomboid
Project Zomboid
playing this one like a life sim. no zombies, just chilling in the woods trying to live off what i can forage. the classic joe bosno strat
Monster Hunter Rise
Monster Hunter Rise
Picked up Sunbreak upon release, played the very first hunt in its story and haven't touched the game again until now

It's been a blast to return to this one esp when coming back to a character that's basically fully geared, or at least geared well enough that you can enjoy having a coherent build. People have a lot to say about various entries in the MH series but you'd be hard pressed to find another game, much less an entire series where each playable weapon feels so satisfying and has this much depth. All of this excludes the new hunting horn which is somehow lamer and less interesting than just showing up and using a gun

if you haven't played this game, no i'm not joking
Jusant
Jusant
Your only real challenge before the very end of chapter 2 is reading a couple of the environments so you can figure out where to go next, and things don't get too interesting in terms of actual navigation challenges until chapter 3. This is fine, the game is great once you hit this point, but I do think it means that a lot of people will refund this before it really gets going
Moonring

PowerWash Simulator
PowerWash Simulator
hard for me to say anything substantive about power wash sim so i wont: if you like videos of things being cleaned then you will like this game
League of Legends
League of Legends
they've admitted previously that they rarely enable alternate game modes like URF and ARURF because the data shows that those modes make people stop playing League forever, and you know what? i understand it. if you're only going to let me play the game mode i enjoy for 2 weeks out of the year, why would i bother playing your frustrating game mode for the remaining 50?
Lethal Company
Lethal Company
have played very, very few rounds of this so far so forgive me if i say something wrong

i'm not a horror game guy and despite its random nature i was expecting this to be more jump scare-y than something like phasmophobia - the complete lack of jumpscares is the only reason i can stomach phasmo to begin with - but ultimately i think i find this more compelling than phasmo

unlike with phasmo there's no real way to come into the level with an advantage due to items and while this robs the game of any broader sense of progression, it doesn't seem like the community really needs that to keep them playing. this frequently feels like it's just a puzzle game w/ enemies that is willing to kill you for making mistakes and i'm really interested in playing more of this w/ friends to see if it remains interesting after like, five hours

My Time at Sandrock
My Time at Sandrock
haven't yet had the chance to try the multiplayer, but this is a go-to cozy game for all the times when i'm playing on my steam deck AND am next to a charger because BOY that shit eats up the battery like it's going out of style

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
scrapped a huge review for this but i think this is one where the broad strokes of the story are okay, but they dip too frequently into fanservice and it hurts the story's credibility. there's one killer moment at the end but otherwise this is kind of a nothingburger despite me still enjoying the mere skeleton of a yakuza game
Microcivilization
Microcivilization
i really think this is harmed by the classic incremental game idea of resetting your save to get a boost to the next loop. this feels awful when you're kinda playing a city builder in the background, watching a society get built - why do i need to reset? let me keep playing the game!
StreetStep: 21st Century Basketball
StreetStep: 21st Century Basketball
a fun little 3-on-3 arcade basketball game that needs just a little more polish to go up like, 1.5 stars. most notable is that the two teammates you're not controlling will always go sit in the corners on defense despite the fact that there's no reason to go out there, giving up free points in the process
NBA 2K17
NBA 2K17
yeah i reinstalled this after uninstalling 2k24 and sure enough, i wasn't just remembering this fondly for no reason. i think creating a character is so much better in 2k24 but everything else is the same or worse compared to 2k17. sure, you can't play online anymore, but 2k have barely given a shit about making multiplayer connections easy or stable on PC anyway, so there's not a meaningful difference. not a GOOD game but its better than a newer one
3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound
3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound
genuinely seems like a fun format - it's possible to form some fun team dynamics - but is ruined at every turn by the most overbearing tutorial of all time and predatory monetization

there's also the classic problem that every single person regardless of position thinks they're allen iverson
NBA 2K24
NBA 2K24
victim of a wrongful warning from the steam community moderators for NBA 2K24 for asking a valid question: are any of my MyCareer teammates going to hit a single fucking shot, or are they going to keep sprinting into 3 defenders under the basket before attempting the worst goddamn layup of all time?

genuinely a rancid product and in a perfect world, a basketball simulation this robust would belong to some developer who gives a shit instead of some besuited freaks who want to make you watch their quibi show or some mazda advertisements before every game

Pro Basketball Manager 2023
Pro Basketball Manager 2023
actually been playing the 2024 one but i'm too lazy to add it myself.

not as deep as football manager and needs some work - especially on the animations - to feel like you're hitting the same simulational depth as those games. it's possible that this thing is still going to lengths to simulate players using their length and such behind the scenes but it's impossible to tell with the amount depicted by the actual, animated simulation. they don't even jump to contest shots
