No one asked to be able to drink mayonnaise. Thousands have asked for the option to make the playable character non-binary.
Well, at least we can now drink mayonnaise. Thanks, Eric.

I get the frustration, but It was not just the mayo. And c'mon, making and update by yourself while you're producing a new game It's no that easy

@CrappySkills no, of course it's not just the mayo LOL. It's more that I'm noticing where the priorities don't lie.
It's a feature that very many people have visibly requested over the course of years for a beloved (extremely popular, very well-funded) game, that actually wouldn't be very technologically challenging to add, yet would make such a dramatic change in enjoyability for the aforementioned people... I just have to wonder what the reason is for not adding it even in such a large update that added so many "QoL" features, many of which are less consequential to players. I'm afraid it doesn't look good. It's not a fun connection to have made.

@kaeruk I'm not trying invalidate it, cause I'm a trans man that already thought for a while I was nb, BUT the community also want a lot of other things he didn't add to the game. And yes, I get it's not as hard as making a child in game grow up, but maybe he's thinking what's the best way to add a non-binary button in game. "Is it going to be offensive if I make this character having boobs or being flat?" "Do I make an option having the player to choose it?" "How I make gender neutral dialogs in ALL LANGUAGES IN-GAME?". I don't think Eric is against lgbt people, after all, we can have same sex marriage in-game. Also, about a lot of people asking... Don't you think you're probably in a bubble? Cause I'm a stardew fan, I'm a pansexual and trans man and this is the first time I see somebody asking for a non-binary button. I see you, but maybe it's not a big parcel of stardew community, maybe Eric didn't even hear about this demand.

If it warms your heart while Eric doesn't add it in-game:

In my original post, I linked to a current petition that has over 7,000 signatures. Which is absolutely not the first time anyone has directly asked/expressed a desire for NB inclusion in Stardew Valley. Eric Barone is surely aware that it's desired.
I'm not going to make any guesses about how large or small a percentage of players or would-be players are non-binary or want this feature, but I don't think even a thousand players asking should be necessary. From my perspective, just supporting the existence of non-binary people in daily life (nothing to do with the game) should be enough reason to think that's a worthwhile – necessary, even – addition to the game.

Sadly, supporting/recognizing gay and m-spec people does not indicate support of non-binary people, or trans people on the whole. So it's worrying when someone in a situation like this (a well-funded game with ongoing support from the dev) ignores these requests for years. It makes me wonder whether I unintentionally supported someone who doesn't think my experience in life is valid/worthy of any recognition. Quite the opposite of heart-warming.

I'm aware of the mod (as is Eric Barone, who made a note regarding it in the update changelog), but thanks for providing the link for others, @CrappySkills . I want to point out how very popular that mod is — another very clear indicator of the degree to which a feature like this is desired!
There is still a huge chunk of players who enjoy (or WANT to enjoy) this game on something other than a PC, so it would be nice if it was added to the game as a regular feature for everyone!

@kaeruk I'm not extending my answer this much, but 40 thousand people downloaded the mod, but that's against 30 million copies sold. It's still a important demand, but not as visible as others, so I still believe he doesn't know about it, because even if It's a high profitable game, It won't change the fact he's just 1 person

I know this is a niche site, but adding a negative, shelved, half-star review because you didn't get a non-binary playable character is why people make fun of us. C'mon man.

Half a star for missing 1 customization option?

Hi @Mamekuma.
I would like to note that I have played over 100 hours of this game and otherwise enjoyed it. I also don't harshly judge games simply for lacking NB inclusion (as you can see if you look at my ratings for other games that lack NB inclusion — the majority of games I have played, by the way). It's specifically the fact that the creator of Stardew Valley has chosen to ignore this request after seeing that it matters to thousands of fans of the game, while choosing to add a lot of other larger (and smaller) updates recently. I'm well within my rights to give it a tentative low rating that reflects how I feel about it. Which, currently, is pretty poorly.
I would love to adjust my rating if this changes, or there is at least some feedback from the developer on the thought process here. Completely ignoring it gives the developer the appearance of being NB-phobic, and that affects how I feel about the game overall, and the time I spent with the game.
The game itself obviously is not a 1/2 star game (although you yourself don't seem to have played it) — there's a lot else to the game, and I had a very generous sampling of that. I would love to be able to enjoy it further. If I feel like adjusting my score later, I'll do so. This site makes that easy. In the meantime, you're welcome to rate the game however you like too (as is everyone else). Not bothered by NB exclusion? Not bothered by the creator potentially thinking NB people don't exist? Glad you're not bothered. It's not a good feeling.

Also let's be real — my low rating didn't even make a dent in Stardew's average rating on here. It is so highly rated. People who don't care about this topic need to chill.
