dang only four reviews before this one?

so Kirby’s Block Ball; as a pre-Air Ride spinoff, it is doomed to not be talked about or even played a lot, heck not even I played it until recently. I just listened to the music one day and thought “hey the music’s neat, Breakout’s neat, I should give it a shot.”

story: King Dedede steals the Sparkling Stars, hides them in his castle at Blockworld, Kirby goes to stop him, yadda yadda that’s it

who cares about story though? we’re here for Breakout Kirby! it plays similar to regular Breakout, you launch your ball (Kirby) to the top of the screen and destroy anything that gets in your way. if you press the A button right before you land on the paddles, Kirby grows limbs and is able to destroy more kinds of blocks. though it wears off quickly, you can keep it up by pressing the A button in the same manner to keep the chain going. there’s still some blocks he can’t destroy on his own so you’ll have to rely on Copy Abilities for that. you have Spark, Needle, Stone, and Burning. each one works in its own unique way and are essential to getting a high enough score to reach the final level. speaking of that, each level has its own borderline score that you can beat by getting a higher score. doing this for every level gets you access to the final level to stop King Dedede. it can actually be pretty challenging trying to beat some of the borderline scores so if you’re looking for some difficulty, there you go. there’s also bonus games you can access in the levels. you can choose between four of them and each one helps you earn more lives. each of them are pretty fun so make sure you try each bonus game at least once.

the game looks great per usual for Kirby, but the music….it’s pretty nice. no Jun Ishikawa or Hirokazu Ando here but instead we got Sukezo Ouyama and Ryoue Takagi for this one game only. as much as Kirby fans joke about Shimomura being elusive, these two are even more elusive. not only we have no pictures of the two, but we also know nothing about them other than they composed the music here then dipped away and moved to Planet Popstar for all we know! anyway, they did an excellent job with the music here. I’m not too big on 8-bit chiptunes for the most part, but man….these tracks can go hard. just go and listen to these tracks online and you’ll see what I’m talking about. the only thing holding them back is the Game Boy’s hardware and even with those limitations they still bop. just imagine how these tracks would have sounded in Super Star or Dream Land 3 (if we got any music composers reading this please get on this lol).

anyway this is a cool spinoff that should be acknowledged more. you got Kirby, Breakout, and great music. give this game a chance, you’re going to have a fun time with this one.
