How to enjoy the granddad of Video Gaming if you suck at video games and equally suck at not getting angry every time you game over and have to restart:
Step 1: Emulate the original NES version and use your knowledge of the game you have acquired over the years of your life to get to maybe World 3 or 4 after much hassle and restarting. Try not to get too confused at the castle mazes.
Step 2: Skim through the Super Mario Wiki Super Mario Bros. Level pages and get an idea of some hidden items and paths that will help you on your way to 8-4. Use the warp zones only once you have beaten the levels in previous worlds you have reached already.
Step 3: If you, like me, still suck and can't get to the final level without getting a game over, then set up the rewind function on your emulator (RetroArch has one) and just rewind every time you die in a "stupid" way until you get to the final boss. Full discretion: you will have to hand in your Gamer Card if you take this step because this is definitely cheating.
Step 4: Beat 8-4 and let all the happiness you can muster wash over you.
Step 5: Out of curiosity, emulate the SNES Super Mario All-Stars compilation and try its version of Super Mario Bros.
Step 6: Realise that version of the game is superior and play it fully, regaling in the improved music, graphics, atmosphere, controls, and gameplay.

Well done, you can now enjoy Super Mario Bros.!
