Super Chicken Jumper
2021

Above all, this game is my platonic ideal for how a 2D platformer should feel - Mario's speed, responsiveness, and jumping mechanics feel absolutely perfect.
The level design is up to Nintendo's high standards. Much of the gameplay variation comes through the Wonder Flowers, which transform either the level or the player in ways that create a central gimmick. Some of the earlier levels have pretty uninspired transformations, like the level becoming populated with unique enemies. But as the game moves forward, the Wonder Flower transformations hit some really strong high points; crucially, the game manages to mix things up from beginning to end and doesn't repeat Wonder Flower transformations too frequently.
My chief issue with the level design is that levels are a bit too short - I think everybody has a different ideal for how long a platformer level should be, but I would imagine most people would find that these levels could have been extended and still not overstayed their welcome. The game is also a bit on the easy side - I would be extremely interested in a DLC campaign or sequel that really focused on the badge abilities and required players to master their unique movesets.
The new artstyle is not as radical of a departure from the New Super Mario Bros. games as I would have liked - you can look at screenshots of this game and clearly see the Mario lineage. It's not a bold new reinvention of how Mario games can look. That said, the game is visually much more appealing to look at, with stronger theming, better backgrounds, and interesting variation. However, the biggest visual improvement is the animations. Everything that moves is imbued with such a strong sense of personality. The game definitely looks better in motion than it does in stills.
The game's soundtrack is full of good, Koji Kondo-esque cheerful music that harkens back to a lot of classic Mario conventions - jazzy athletic themes, odd funky themes for underground levels, and unique instrument additions upon gaining certain power-ups. The game plays around with some integration of music and gameplay, and while I think it has been done better elsewhere (namely, Rayman Legends), that doesn't detract from how well it's done here.
