A very weird sidescrolling action game. I know there are other games in the series, but this is the only one I've played. A lot of fun and a lot of replayability, and an absolutely banger soundtrack. Some wild difficulty spikes, including some parts that feel downright unfair, but overall a good experience.

i played this game two player with my friend. On one level, she died, so i said "I guess it's up to me!!!" and i died immediately.

Goemon's Great Adventure is a pretty damn good platformer that translates Goemon's 2D platforming action on N64 fairly well. It does have some flaws but I enjoyed it alot!

The presentation is just as great (if not better) than Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and that's solely due to the real time day & night system the game has where it visually & audibly affects every stage & town in the game. Speaking of audible, the music...Man. My praises might actually be even higher than Mystical Ninja, I don't know what OST I'd prefer because Great Adventure's soundtrack kicks MAJOR ass. Every tune is catchy and jammin while also being dynamic too?? My god. Stellar soundtrack that also doesn't feel compromised on the N64 hardware. The writing is still pretty funny, as a tried and true tradition of the Goemon series not taking itself seriously at all.

The gameplay is pretty damn fun, mech battles are back (I miss the grapple move from Mystical Ninja), but everything is pretty fluid & brisk. Jumps are a bit heavy and not super great at covering distance as there were several times I actually screwed up on what would've been pretty easy point a to point b jumps. It's weird. I also really liked the progression where you collect entry passes to progress. You're rewarded with them by completing levels, finding secret exits, and doing sidequests challenges issued by NPCs within the towns per area. Definitely a more fun implementation of these than Ganbare Goemon 4.

Now for my issues with the game: Character swapping is still here but its been moved to a teahouse in towns & warp pad in levels. I got used to it, but I wasn't super big on the change either. The N64 had enough buttons to allow for character swapping, I don't see what excuse Great Adventure would have because you never use the C-Buttons outside of the mecha battles. It's a shame too because I feel like this change also made Sasuke & Ebisumaru feel less involved where you'll sometimes use them for certain things when they're needed. I mostly played as Yae & Goemon since they had alot of pros to them (Speed & Range) which in turn, made the other two feel obsolete.

The game has fair challenge, but its kinda muddied in spots where enemies are placed, how some level design is executed (towards the end), and the fact that you only have 3 hit points now. You can get an additional (temporary) 3 with armor or a golden cat statue, but you'll be eating a hit or two pretty fast. It also doesn't help that this game is one of those platformers where anything becomes a pit if the camera doesn't show what's below in time. I've taken quite a few deaths because of that and it was a bit annoying.

Overall, Goemon's Great Adventure is another underrated N64 game that I'd definitely recommend. Just be wary of some of it's quirks and you'll be in for a fun time!

An N64 game that I haven't had sitting in my backlog for almost or over a decade? Shocking! Despite that, I have wanted to play both this & Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon ever since I was going through my N64 collecting craze. During the months of scouring flea markets, thrift stores, and eBay, for one reason or another, I was never able to get my hands on either game. I found & beat a copy of Mystical Ninja a few years ago and eventually got this game soon after, but I didn't get around to completing it until recently. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Mystical Ninja, but there is still a lot to like about Goemon's second N64 adventure.

While Mystical Ninja was more of a 3d Zelda-like game, Goemon's Great Adventure is a 2D platformer with the only thing that both games have in common being that they share the same 4 playable characters each with a unique gimmick. need to progress. The story in this one is not nearly as ridiculous as Mystical Ninja but you still get that classic Goemon goofiness.

There are a lot of positive things to say about this game. The graphics were pretty for its time and it felt great to play. It also does a great job of making each character useful since some levels will require you to utilize their different abilities like Goemon's chain pipe, Yae's & Sasuke's ability to swim underwater, or Ebisumaru's megaphone that creates small platforms. Exploring the towns and doing the various quests scattered throughout them was enjoyable and made the game feel more lively. Impact makes a return meaning you can still do those awesome mech fights just like in Mystical Ninja. Lastly, this game has co-op which I believe most 2D platformers did not have at the time. I played it all by myself, but I would have loved to play this with friends too.

It isn't perfect though and there is a reason it doesn't have a higher score. The biggest reason for this being the difficulty. While It is a good thing that the game is more difficult since Mystical Ninja was a bit too easy, it is also a bit too unforgiving at times. If you don't find any golden cats or purchase armor, you only have three hits until you lose a life. Not only that, but something TyphoonSwell mentions in his review is that there are a handful of enemies with annoying gimmicks. It was something I kept in mind as I played because I died countless times because of them, especially towards the end. The mech fights drag on a bit more than they did in Mystical Ninja if I remember correctly. I was never good at them but even with my lack of skill, I don't remember them being as long as they were here.

Goemon's Great Adventure is an underrated N64 classic that desperately needs more attention. The difficulty might be a little bs at times, but the fun & fast platforming, local co-op, and the wacky charm the Mystical Ninja series has makes it a game worth playing.

This game is hard as fuck. It doesn't care about being fair. There is going to be a horde of extremely japanese ghost demons or whatever that's going to fuck you up twenty feet from your starting position of the level and you are gonna like it.

The onslaught of enemies will have annoying gimmicks and will kill your fragile ass immediately if you are not careful at all times. There will be no relenting of challenges. It does help that the funkiest music you've ever heard makes you want to dance in between bouts of frustration. It's an odd combination of sensations, but this game still manages to hit just right.

As bullshit as the challenge was, I wanted to take it on. The levels kept things interesting. I was playing this upscaled at like 4x and the cutscenes looked great!
