definitely as primitive a racer as you really are probably going to get. I do think that having the game take place at night so as to explain the black general background and not have to render things like a road, the sides of the road, and a sky is honestly a pretty ingenious idea for the tech, as the vibe of zooming down a winding highway in the heat of the night does pull through. You use the paddle controller as a makeshift steering wheel, and it definitely works. Despite how big and squishy the button on the paddle controller is, it's not analogue which makes controlling your speed kinda hard for the tougher courses. There are 3 different predesigned courses of increasing difficulty to select from alongside a fourth randomized track, so there's a decent amount of game here to learn as well. I guess my only real gripe comes from the fact that like Star Ship this game is more time-based rather than life-based, as each of the courses is set to a 90 second timer where your goal is to get as far as possible within that time by not running into the sides of the road or oncoming traffic. The time limit plus the fixed way that you earn points per distance does mean that there's a theoretical score limit if you can play without hitting anything for the entire 90 seconds. It's definitely a lot harder than it sounds to do that but considering that it is only a 90 second run it's not the hardest goal to really strive for nawsay. That being said though, on the basic difficulty your car is actually speed capped, and by flipping one of the difficulty switches on the console you can release your blocky car from its shackles to reach true speed. I'm not joking, on the expert difficulty your car transforms from your moms ol' corolla to the fucking blue falcon, that shit gets supercharged to the point where I think it'd have to be borderline impossible to do the sharper turns on the second or third course without hitting anything and even then you'd certainly have to slow down a lot. So maybe it is hard to hit that score threshold! Either way, I don't even think that the score is the main draw of this game, because there is also a mode included for all 4 track types where there's no timer whatsoever and you can just drive as far as your hearts content. I think the appeal of just being able to drive down a road with the sense of speed and perspective that this game has is enough fun in its own right, so that's really what the game is all about at the end of the day (or night in this games case).

For a 1978 Atari 2600 game, its not terrible for a racing game. I didn't have much fun with it but I tried it. Maybe it's just me.

Playing Through My Evercade Collection Part 1: Atari Vol 1

I feel in some ways I have to be nice to this one given it came out in 1980. Its surprisingly playable for its age, even if it is incredibly limited both in scope and in what its attempting to achieve. Not bad but very aged in both a good and bad sense.
