SM64: Through the Ages is a ROM hack/mod of Super Mario 64 developed by Kaze Emanuar. It was made using the Super Mario 64 Decompilation Project. In this game, Mario travels through stages inspired by historical locations or periods. Also, Mario can now be accompanied by different Pokémon, each one with a different special ability.

This game is genuinely thrilling to play. So many well-made environments, fun stars, et cetera. I like to think of it as a re-interpretation of Super Mario's Wacky Worlds as it would've been as a Super Mario 64 sequel, rather than a Super Mario World sequel. The majority of the levels are a joy to play through, with great puzzles, plenty of replayability, little to no tedium and a lot of creativity.

Then, the last two levels are inexplicably based on Alice in Wonderland and Planet Namek from Dragon Ball. I'm sorry, but this is not what I played this hack before. They were both somewhat fun, but they honestly just ruined the whole hack for me, especially because of how linear they were, and how basic half of their respective stars were. The endgame was pretty dull, too. I like the idea of a court case, and it was certainly funny, but it came out of nowhere and was totally inconsistent with the rest of the game, which was really disappointing.

Still, at least the HUB world is incredibly charming and has some nice secrets to unfold, and the Pokémon gimmick, while random and weird, was well-done and interesting.

I think my favourite level is probably the first one, purely because it has a massive Indiana Jones reference, which truly just made my day.

Super Mario through the Ages is my new favorite Mario 64 rom hack. Just about every world is a hit and the fun really never ends. The level design is great; Kaze has really taken a step up in that department. The theming is fantastically fun, and the Pokémon wrinkle is super interesting if not a bit under-utilized. I wish you were able to switch Pokémon anywhere so that they could be more aligned with the stars. I also wish the training rooms were a bit longer, but I still love those. The hub world is also very neat and I love how the island progresses as you gain more and more stars.
El Dorado, The Great Wall, Planet Namek, DK COLOSUS. There just so cool man.
