The King of Fighters 2001 is the eighth game in The King of Fighters series, the third and final part of the "Nests Chronicles" story arc, and the first game produced following the closure of the original SNK. KOF 2001 kept the Striker assist system from the previous two KOF games, but added a new twist to it - the ability to adjust how many Strikers a team could have. While teams in 1999 and 2000 were limited to selecting one teammate as an assist, now teams could have up to 3 assist characters, or none at all.

The fact that this game even exists is really fucking impressive.
Honestly I think the gameplay overall feels pretty good even with the useless strikers.
Zero might seem unfair at first but he has a fuck ton of punishable moves and Igniz is the hardest boss in the franchise on paper but the AI is so dumb it's really easy to cheese him.

Although still a polished fighter in some ways, they again revamped the Striker system rendering it almost unusable yet again, and even though every SNK's final bosses had some unfair behavior, the final duo now is literally impossible to beat unless you use the cheap advantages the game give you when inserting another coin.
