I've never played Dragon Quest 4 before so I don't hold any real attachment to the source material. (I have played other DQ games, DQ V been my favourite.) So seeing that narrative through an alternate perspective was interesting.

Unfortunately, the story itself was rather lacklustre, mostly just there as a vehicle for the gameplay. The turn-based combat was excellent it reminded me of games such as Digimon World 2 and Yokai Watch. The syntheses mechanic is quite robust, as over 500 monsters are collectible in this game. It's also possible to play Frankenstein with these monsters to create creatures that could stand against any Hero of the DQ franchise.

The only major flaw I can point out in this game is the grinding. As you'll be doing that that a lot, especially if you're planning to raise a monster army.

In contrast to it's more recent monster taming contemporaries, it's possibly the better one out there, especially on the Switch.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 was excellent, Pokemon Legends: Arceus was excellent and DQM: Dark Prince stands amongst them.

It's quite rare we get a game like this, it's always seen as a risk as the monster taming genre is quite niche and the only game of this nature that sells is Pokemon.

Regardless, I can definitely recommend this title to any monster taming enthusiasts. It's an experience you can really dive into and feast upon. Also, if you're a fan of DQ 4 then you'll appreciate the story from Psaro's perspective and the other myriad forms of fan service.
