Sure it’s better than the first and ambitiously cinematic with a pretty wacky plot and some cool locations but the gameplay becomes extremely spammy as it goes on just like the first

When the only mortal ever to kill a deity asks for a lobotomy, maybe you should indulge him.

Like the first one? This one has more fleshed-out mechanics, more engaging combat, better story direction, cutscenes that don't look like molten turds, and is overall a superior experience in every way. Still don't think these have anything on the DMC series - especially not while this still has one of gaming's worst evade systems and fighting that's too easy to get caught in a move with no real way to course-correct - but the work they've done on these environments is simply gorgeous. One thing these games always excel at is placing an ant-sized character in a variety of massive, megalophobia-inducing levels and having you gaze upon how epic everything looks. From pristine Greek marble interiors, great long chains to run across over an endless sea, sticky swamplands, and island-sized gigantic mobile horse statues with metal armor - it all looks amazing, especially on the HD Origins collection (the cinematics there also look incredible). Though at this point Santa Monica is still unable to create challenge modes in these games that are even remotely enjoyable or well made. "Challenge of the Titans" is somehow, against all odds... WORSE than "Challenge of the Gods".

Quando era criança não consegui zerar GOW 2 por causa que jogava em um vídeogame pirata mas depois de um tempo consegui zerar, é posso dizer que foi muito bom finalmente zerar, pretendo jogar o GOW 3 que nunca joguei.

God of War 2 is the weakest entry in the series, mainly because of the story pacing issues and way too many block-pushing puzzles. It often feels that the puzzles are unnecessary and there just to make the game longer. There are sections where it's hard not to be bored and annoyed for the fact that reward for solving a puzzle is always a new puzzle.

i feel like i'm crazy every time i see somebody rank this as one of the best entries in the series, maybe i'm lacking nostalgia that people might have or maybe it just never ended up clicking with me but i felt like the combat was pretty clunky and badly aged and the story was mostly uninteresting except for the beginning and end kinda. at least it set up god of war 3 to be sick as hell

Surpassed the first one in every aspect. Great sequel.

Outlasts its welcome by a bit and much like the first has some infuriating sections and awkward puzzles, mixed in with some annoying enemies in a lot of spots.
Its improvements are solid, but not enough to give it a higher rating than I gave the first. I enjoyed my time with it overall and would reccommend it if you enjoy action games.

"If all those on Olympus would deny me my vengeance, then all of Olympus will die."

A huge improvement in every way over the original title, God of War II builds upon each aspect that made the first game successful and amplifies things to make it a more memorable, more fun and more engaging time.

We see more variety in both the environments and game-play here, with some fun flying sections and the great Wings of Icarus item, and the puzzles feel more engaging and satisfying whilst not being too frustrating of a challenge. The Titans are a really cool set of allies for Kratos and show just how powerful he is as we see him going into battle with literal giants by his side against the pantheon, although I would have liked to have seen a little more of the individual titans throughout.

Kratos continues to be a great protagonist, and after hours of fun combat with interesting spells such as the magical bow and an earth-quake type deal (which are basically just aesthetic alternatives to the previous game's options, and I never used the sub-weapons, although they were nice inclusions), the game finishes up on a strong cliff-hanger that perfectly sets up an epic conclusion.

Improves upon everything from the first game. Better sense of scale, a more satisfying difficulty curve, and some surprisingly intricate puzzles. Only big knock against it are the two weapons that aren’t the blades of chaos are worthless.

the biggest zelda dungeon ever made with almost zero story

I'm starting to finally get it...

God of War 2 was an absolutely pleasant suprise in my trip through the God of War series, and it helped me to understand why these games were praised. This game in particular feels likes an action-adventure game filled to the brim with varied and interesting levels, suprisingly fun puzzles, bosses each with their own gimmicks and solutions, with a simplistic combat system that is quite mashy. God of War 1 felt more like a half-backed hack and slash game with barely any bosses, not enough puzzles and varied level design, but a magnificient spectacle. I am so glad that the developers went into this direction rather than doubleing down on making combat the main draw.

The combat encounters have been reduced to allow platofrming, puzzles, and bosses to shine, so the combat is no where near as exhausting as the first game. The enemy variety has increased as well, adding a bit more complexity to how to take down enemies rather than your simple square square triangle spam. These levels are fantasitic. Whether be that God of War spectacle with the music and visuals, the tightly crafted tests of the new powers you achieved, or the puzzles that were fun shakeups to the pacing of the game, I was having a blast. I kept saying to myself, "oh, we are doing this now? Cool!" and I could not wait where the game took me next. The bosses were the best part of the first game, so I am glad there are way more in this game. They kinda went all-out with the first boss of the game, which really made a lot of the later bosses feel much less exciting, but still fun regardless. Bosses boiled down into straight up duels, or setpiece bosses with small little puzzle solving to take them down. The best bosses were ones that combined both of these designs, and I hope GoW 3 really plays into that.

I still have my gripes with the mashy combat. Magic is still incredibly powerful, but each magical ability felt viable in comparison to the electric power dominating the first game. Certain encounters feel near impossible (especially aon hard) without magic, and the game never refills your magic automatically at savepoints. Crowd control moves are still the way to go for most of the enemies, leading to yet again juggling and air combos to be left in the dust of the combat loop. I hope they atleast flesh out the grapple you can do with the blades of chaos (Or I guess Athena's blads in this game), because the juggle potential from bouncing enemies is fun, but by no means helpful, as you tend to get swarmed anytime you attempt to use it. The spear and the hammer feel pointless because the Blades of Chaos is much more fun to use, and far more optimal for larger crowds. The game is built around using the Blades, so I felt like I was limiting my moveset by using any other weapon. There may be some enemey speciifc weaknesses that each weapon can take adavantage , but I never had the motivation to experiment.

The story is still solid, but I don't think it is as engaging as the first. The emotional turmoil and how that fuels Kratos's character in the first game was amazing to see, but this game seems to put that more personal look of Kratos on hold as revenge becomes the main focus. I also think this game relies heavily on the third game to complete its story, while the first game feels like a more condensed story that could have ended or continue at its finale. I've heard that the psp games lean more into what I like about the first game's story, so we will see.

I'm a fan of God of War now. I think this game solidified that. On the Ps2 in 2007, I could see why this game was so impactful to the Ps2's library. I cannot wait to see where the series goes from here.

8/10 ;)

A great improvement to the original in many ways, grand in scope and scale but I love how the game feels like a action packed but crescendoing burn to one of the craziest finales in video games. The last few boss fights are absolutely insane and the narrative resolution just expands upon the original games story in a satisfying way, even with a cliffhanger ending this is easily hands down one of the best cliffhanger in video games that despite my nostalgia still gives me chills. Absolutely loved returning to this despite some moments of frustration... but gonna blame that on my stupidity. This is one of the best sequels in games ever.

Es un juego tremendo en partes (especialmente el inicio y el final), pero en otras es una experiencia sumamente frustrante, tediosa, y simplemente no divertida. Recomiendo jugarlo en normal o inclusive fácil, porque es un juego digno de experimentar.

And so comes to a close the other game on the PS3 God of War Collection I picked up, and I'm glad I did! This game is really everything a sequel should strive to be. It controls similarly but tighter. The puzzle and platforming has been tightened up a LOT. More bosses and better bosses. I honestly don't have THAT much to say about this given that I already have my God of War 1 review on here, but I'll give my thoughts on this nonetheless.

As previously stated, this is basically an improved version of the first game in every way. The level designed is really improved to make things better signposted (sometimes a bit TOO much and oddly sometimes not enough), with hidden items quite cleverly hidden. They're way more linear with less potential for confusing backtracking and levels that wrap around like the first game had. They flow much better, even if you're hunting for goodies. The puzzles are also a lot harder than in the first game. I never had to google a single thing for the first game, but there were like 4 or 5 puzzles I had to google the solution to (partly because they're relying on mechanics the game doesn't explain or doesn't explain well enough to apply, in my defense).

The combat is largely the same, but your sub-weapons have been changed up a bit. Two of the magic spells have been swapped out for new ones, and instead of the sub-weapon sword from last game, now you have a hammer and a spear (eventually), so combat can really get mixed up depending on how you want to focus things. This game has WAY more bosses in it, like 3 or 4 times more, as well as more enemy types. The combat has also been fine tuned a bit to just make it more fun, in particular dodging has been made easier to break other combos to do and quicker to recover from, and that just helps the pace of everything else SO much that it can't be ignored.

The presentation is also great. There's a lot more story in this compared to the first. Much more story, dialogue, and cinematics, as well as actually trying to add some kind of message to the story (although it's a fairly light one). Granted the first game's bar was basically touching the ground in regards to story, this game raises it more than it had to, and that's worth something I think. The music is also fantastic and especially the boss tracks really get the blood pumping. On top of that, perhaps it's just the PS3 up-res, but the polygon count on this game is incredible. This has to be one of the best looking games on PS2, bar none. Just the fact this game runs so well is an achievement on the hardware. If I were actually playing it on a PS2, I reckon smoke would be coming out of the back of it ;P

Verdict: Highly Recommended. The first God of War feels like a first try, but this sequel is exactly what a sequel should be. It is an all-around refinement of everything about the first game. Easily one of the best action/adventure games on the PS2, and something well worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing and can handle the (admittedly rather tame graphically by today's standards) violence involved in Kratos' enemy executions.

My only complaint about this game is that are still some enemies that are just annoying to fight against and I felt there was some urgency missing during some story parts.
Everything else was upgraded from the previous one, the voice acting, graphics, gameplay and story are all better here!
The boss battles and puzzles were so much better here too!
If there's a remake of GoW 1 and 2 coming I hope it's more of a visual-only remake and that they don't change a lot.
If you haven't played any GoW game yet please do so you can play this amazing game!!

I liked this game way more then the first one. Smoothened up the gameplay by little movement tweeks like adding a perfekt block/parry move and it feels like combat flows better in generel. Also for me it never felt like the game had any lenghts or tedious segments.

I thought this game was a decent amount of fun. I liked the mythological side of the game a lot and loved how it is used in the game. I like the concept of going around to the different gods and "interacting" with them. Still, the story hasn't aged very well and the gameplay isn't outstanding.

While the game is better than the first one, it's still not good. The thing I hate most about the GoW games is that the controls are awful, and it's unacceptable for this kind of game, even in the PS2 days. Kratos almost never does what you tell him to do, and it's more frustrating than a game should be. This single-handedly ruins not only the game but the whole series. But whatever, the story is a little better here, though Kratos still sucks as a character. At least the level design is good.

Takes the formula that made the first so good and just improves in every way, different and new abilities, a few more sub weapons, God Of War 2 does everything the first did and then some.
