A fun little short arcade experience, you can knock it out in a couple hours. Was pretty pleasantly surprised by how solid the controls feel, they aren't perfect but they still work well. Most of the gameplay annoyances come from the limited draw distance, it's especially annoying in some of the ground target missions. I also think the lack of variety hurts it, it's probably the way in which the game is the most arcade-y. The differences between jets is pretty lacking and the strategy pretty much always the same. I also wish I had known about expert before I finished because I wanted axial movement all game lol. Still, a pretty fun concise game and I'm excited for the rest of the series.

Basic but the foundations of the series are there.

Mostly shreds. The maps on some missions are slightly too large and empty—man, the oil pipeline—and the difficulty spike at the end boss is a little over the top. The giant floating war machine does look sick at least.

Starting my Ace Combat journey for the first time! I enjoyed this game and it was very easy to pick up and play but this definitely has first game syndrome and feels like a tech demo at times. The D-pad control is not perfect but gets the job done. As someone who loves mission based games like Armored Core i had a great time with most of the missions! It never felt repetitive (hard to when the game is only 2 hours long) and i was always super engaged in it's gameplay despite it not being the most challenging game (until the last 2 missions force you to try a little) It's incredibly lame that it applies the same skin to every plane, i want to use the decals that they show in the shop screen why would you do that just to bait me??? Third person not having important hud elements is also stupid as hell, why give me an option when it actively makes the game harder! There's tons of room to improve in future games and i'm excited to see where things go from here on out!!

It’s a video game, and it’s not offensive. Music is good.

Certainly a videogame which was made and released!

It doesn't get any more to the point than this. Air Combat. You're in the air, and there's combat.

Still had fun though! There's something charming about its simplicity. It's also not very long, so if you have an afternoon to spare, you'll see the credits rolling before you know it.

Cool soundtrack, simple yet effective dogfights, a cute lowpoly desert and an extremely fake sounding British commander all make for a nice introduction to the Ace Combat series.

The one that began it all. It's of course very simple, being an arcade game but in a way, it's still quite fun even if your movement is very limited.

I had pretty low expectations for this one, partially due to how I ended up experiencing this series. I had a craving for some aerial dogfighting and ended up playing (and loving) Ace Combat 7, the latest entry in the series. I'd always wanted to go back and try the older titles, but I only just got round to doing so.

With the preamble out of the way, you night be able to see why I was wary of this one. Ace Combat 7 was polished to a tee, its gameplay forged carefully over almost 20 years of flight combat games. Surely there was no way they got it right the first time around? And yet, here we are. Air Combat is lacking in story, lacking in visual fidelity, but the core experience is almost entirely intact. I played on hard, with the "expert" control scheme (which really should be default) and while there was some jank, some pretty poor early PS1 graphics and little in regards to mission diversity, I was immediately having fun! Maneuvering my plane felt good, the thrill of the chase I was smitten with was present and short runtime prevented me from boredom. While I find myself a pretty poor critic of music, I would consider this soundtrack to have its fair share of "bangers" which I'm sure I'll be listening back to.

A simple, effective start to a series with endless potential. Let's just hope that they continue to aim higher and higher from here, evolving on the initial premise. I know they reach AC7 one day, but I'm hopeful the entries in the middle will provide something fresh that I haven't seen just yet.

It was one of two games i got with the original Playstation on christmas in 1997. It was kinde fun back in the day.

For the first game in the Ace Combat series it's serviceable, but console versions are bare bones compared to the sequels but for the first game it's still really fun to dogfight and shoot planes down.

Jueguito muy divertido y corto con un montón de problemas de calidad de vida (lo que se hacia antes para que te durasen mas los juegos supongo) y muchos temazos!

I am suprised that it doesn't feel like shit to control, pretty solid foundation for the franchise excited to see where the developers will take it next

I decided to play this before sinking my teeth into Ace Combat 7.

With the advent of 3D gaming and the fifth generation consoles, there was a lot trial-and-error, as game developers tried to figure out how to make the games work in this new frontier. There were plenty of disaster cases with unfortunate control schemes.

I'm quite suprised to say that Air Combat/Ace Combat 1 is a decently functional year one PS1 title.

Yeah, graphically its not too great. But unlike the say, the first Tekken, that looked like 2D sprite marionettes, Air Combat's stuff you can tell its proper 3D.

Its thankfully pretty easy to pick and play, with first mission giving plenty of space to learn.

The planes stats are generally quite balanced, with clear strenghts and weaknesses. There isnt that many that are either outright superior or terrible - except for the unfortunate F-117, which only saving grace is "stealth."

Soundtrack is solid, clearly inspired by the 1986 Top Gun's BGM.

So admittedly, I had deceptively lot of fun with this. I am quite aware that this series will make some serious advancements, but Air Combat was still a good time and a quite exceptional early PS1 game.

kinda fun but simple, plain but in a endearing sort of way.

i couldn't for the life of me tell you what the story of this game is, but the pick up and play nature of doing missions is what gives me quite a good feel.
the controls also are quite simple, way simpler than i expected, for some reason i was scared this was some sort of Dos simulator with 300 buttons but ported, not its quite arcadey fun, if the first one is enjoyable as it is, i can't wait for the rest in the series.
also it works great when mapped properly to WASD

Very very slow game. It still has some occasional thrills, but it is definitely not engaging or necessary like the other Ace Combat games.

Honestly? Kinda surprised at how well this holds up! Not to say I expected the original Ace Combat to be a bad time at all; I figured it'd just kind of okay. It's certainly got a bit of early PS1 energy to it with some whacky pop in, but overall? A pretty damn fun time!

The game controls pretty smooth, assuming your current plane isn't rocking the mobility of a brick, making the constant aerial dogfights a blast. In fact, plenty of the missions were great fun to play, and that motherfucking soundtrack was the cherry on top. Shit's pure electricity right in my veins; exactly the type of heavy rock you need to get you in the zone. And with a pretty damn short runtime, it all makes for a real neat way to kill an evening, and a bunch of enemy fighter planes. Good stuff, bring on the sequels!

surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. after getting used to the controls, it was very fun

a solid start to the franchise

Took a bit to get used to the controls, but it was enjoyable. The last level is a sharp difficulty spike.

the motion sickness g forces fucking kicked my ass

I honestly got surprised by how easy the game was to handle. I was expecting very rough controls but after five - ten minutes it got way easier and fun to play. Collecting planes is fun and the mission are already very similar to other close combats. The story is a bit average and lack a strong story telling, which isn't very surprising if you put the game back to the year it was made.

"They call us ace pilots but as far as I can tell the only difference between us and the other guys is we're not afraid of death," I say looking longingly into the distance.

Played this because the known coward and fake Ace Combat fan @zombiehunter837 told me to start at Ace Combat 2

Solid game, arcade version was probably really fun with friends.
