Possibly the shortest demo in existence, but I guess just long enough to get me interested.
Since all you do in this tease of a teaser is open a couple doors and respond to a couple button prompts, all it really manages to do is show off a beautiful sense of atmosphere. The graphics are wild with amazing textures and lighting effects, the few sounds you'll hear are great, even simple things like a door's creak as it slowly closes.
Grace is a likable character with childish naivety. If you interact with the sink, she'll say, "I already washed my hands today!" and she acts like someone's just up to silly business when the room abruptly and violently shifts into a nightmare. When a monster attempts an attack, she just tells him to "Stay!" like he's a bad dog.
Unfortunately, if you've read this, that's the entire teaser. While the atmosphere was great and I was really enjoying it, that just makes the fleeting length even more insulting. I've never had the rug pulled from under me like this before. Remember how long P.T. could be? How spoiled we once were.
I guess I was surprised to see some Hollywood stars will be in the actual game: Jodie Comer and David Harbour. Cool, but I'd rather have gotten, like, 10 more minutes of teaser? A few more rooms? A puzzle?!? The actors were pretty stiff, too, I'm not certain they were right for a game. Guess we'll see.
In a way, I'm excited for whatever Alone in the Dark we get out of this. If the full game will look, sound, and feel as good as this hasty teaser did, that's a big plus. I just also feel sort of emotionally robbed.
I went for the near-middling rating because I kind of liked what I saw, but I don't think I could ever recommend this to anybody. They'd probably call me an asshole. It ends here.

A very minor experience demonstrating Alone in the Dark may turn out to be a solid early 2010s AA release with a heart, complete with unnerving dead-eyed character models (look at Grace in the poster!), some real iffy contextual interactions (the stairs lol) and plodding movement. With Mikael Hedberg (SOMA) writing, I'm still looking forward to the full game and am curious about how they'll blend the surreal southern gothic tone with the creature-feature aspects, which are a little clumsily combined here.
Well this, uh, mostly consisted of me just, like, walking around a mansion and delivering a letter. I get that this is meant to be a loose remake of Jack in the Dark — a quick ten-minute tech demo starring one Grace Saunders, meant to show the game’s engine in action — though I think the difference here is scale: while Jack in the Dark used all-new assets and locations, telling its own self-contained story, Grace in the Dark is in its entirety things that would go on to be in the full game: the mansion, the monster models, even one of the hallucinations you get where the mansion changes shape is one you get in the full game. Evidently, this is meant to give a sneak peek of the story, do a dramatic cast reveal of JODIE COMER and DAVID HARBOUR as the lead roles, and give an idea of what the full game is going to do… which means it loses a lot of its potential impact if you’ve already gone ahead and played the full game. I do like the little glimpse of a not-quite-on-kilter narrator in Grace, and I do like how certain things are utilized differently here than they are in the full game (the enemy models, specifically, and there’s a cool thing you can do on the stairs that you can’t in the main game), but as a whole… it would probably have been capable as a demo, as a little preview of what was to come. On its own, it’s a bit too short and a bit too straightforward to really be... much of anything. It’s no Jack in the Dark, that’s for sure.
I am already playing through the alone in the dark game but I thought I should stop and play this since it called it self a prologue and is only like 15 minutes long and well its just a really terrible demo that doesn't represent the gameplay at all and is full of cliche jump scares and a whole lot of walking I am surprised bloober didn't make this
Feels weird to rate a demo, but so ineffective and brief that it made me want to play the full game much less? Mechanically it does nothing interesting at all and fails to capture any kind of atmosphere. It feels like they're setting us up for a very tedious on-rails experience. They should've just kept me guessing with this remake.
now why the hell was the file size so massive compared to what was here?
it's cute for what it is but i'm not going to get too excited about the full game yet as this was only a small (and i mean SMALL) glimpse into things.
i liked Grace and her almost non-reaction to everything and look forward to seeing more of her either way.
maybe we'll finally end up getting a second good game in this series this year. fingers crossed.
