This is a great sequel; one that patched up pretty much everything the first game got wrong. More varied combat encounters, thanks to the three weapons and their differing playstyles. A lot of movement upgrades, to be used in fun platforming sections, something the previous game was lacking outside the Bloodstained collab.

Plus, Blasphemous 2's aesthetics are still refined and gorgeous, with delightful sprite art and background work to be beheld absolutely everywhere. The soundtrack, the sound design, the vocal performances all play their part in selling the game's tone.

Unfortunately, metroidvania fans may be a bit disappointed with one element: the game is much, much more linear. The abilities and equipment you find unlocks new areas for you in a rather strict order, which the previous game wasn't so adamant about enforcing. The experience is still good, too, but outside of 100% completion, the game feels more or less on rails. Combined with a story that is, to me, less gripping, the game does feel like it lost some charm along the way.

Still — the first game's main strengths are here, with renewed mechanics that make the game shine all the way through. This is a solid platformer, with interesting combat, fun movement, and a masterfully executed aesthetic.

¡Recomendadisimo!

Literally just the first, but more and better. Harder too, the penultimate boss kicked my ass, but in a good way.

Blasphemous 2 plays almost exactly like its predecessor; it's not a big leap, but it doesn't need to be because the basic pillars are already there. It builds on that with some small, welcome changes like three different weapon sets that are perfectly integrated into exploring and reaching new places. My favorite was the Rapier/Dagger Combo that slices through enemies lightning-fast, and they especially helped a lot during later boss fights, particularly with the parry and block mechanics.

What especially stands out for me is the grotesquely designed game world and characters. I also call it the black metal aesthetic. For example, there's an NPC who feeds a baby with wax through a breast he cut off from his wife who died after childbirth and sewed onto himself. This is his penance imposed by the Miracle, just like many others who suffer a similar absurd fate. Also, the sense of place is beautifully done. From a distance, you see a cathedral hanging upside down on a mountain, winding its way through a valley, and you can actually visit that cathedral. Or a basilica that has sunk into the sea, but through your actions, it becomes visitable again through a reflection, and this reflection also has a gameplay component.

My biggest criticism is still the very monotonous soundtrack. While it thematically fits the Spanish-Christian-inspired setting well through its choice of instruments, it lacks punch and melodies. The only time I was musically pleasantly surprised was during a boss fight when, as the battle duration increased, the instruments became faster and more imposing. This is completely missing from the rest of the game.

Ending A is really special and it's the perfect farewell to the Penitent One. I got goosebumps during the last cutscene. The after-credits scene also heavily implies a DLC or even a sequel with a beloved character, and I'm all in for that. Well done, Game Kitchen!

Overview: Much better than its predecessor. The team certainly noticed and collected the general complaints made to the previous game and managed to produce a game with a much more satisfying gameplay.
Small criticisms: at the moment (April 2024) the game does not have DLCs and so it is much shorter than the first title. As in the first one, the difficulty of the bosses is depressing (especially from the last boss): little variety of moves, easily avoidable moves, few levels, etc. There are a maximum of 2 interesting bosses. The standard enemies are interesting.

This Metroidvania with Souls-like vibes is seriously addictive. The pixel art is stunning, and the gameplay is just pure fun, only 1 boss felt cruel and the lore and Spanish voices is just mindblowing. Definitely planning a second playthrough and aiming for that platinum.

This is in contention for the biggest improvement for a sequel ever in my book, and if anything deserved the glow up it was Blasphemous. The first game drew me in with its extraordinarily detailed pixel art representing a world filled with some of the coolest boss designs I could imagine. The problem is that the actual game was pretty much the barest bones metroidvania I've ever played, it just had nothing interesting going on mechanically. I wanted a sequel with some meat on its bones to back up its face, and Blasphemous II is exactly that.

From the first couple hours discovering the altarpiece system, the new platforming options, and the 3 weapons with distinct abilities in and out of combat, I was floored by just how much it was improved in every regard. Plus, they nailed having a satisfying parry, which is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a melee action game, so I was hooked from there. Not only are the mechanics greatly improved, but the level design is as well. Every new option in your toolkit is used in traversal, and never in a way that feels perfunctory. Everything works together to put you into that platforming flow state that perfectly compliments the deliberate action of the combat.

Really just an all around great game that stands toe to toe with some of the best in its genre, and is making me want to try out more sequels to games that I didn't fuck with, but had cool ideas. I really just want more iterative sequels like this in general, that build on the foundation laid down in such a perfect way, to make you really appreciate the stuff that was already good even more.

Even if it's a great and clear upgrade to the first chapter, from the gameplay to the exploration, I still think that the first one was the best of them to my taste.

I found it quite a little bit too easy until the last section of the game, and quite a bit shorter than what I expected. Take into account that this last remark is more of a feeling by comparing to the first one with all the DLC included, so it's probably more my fault than the game.

Aside from the comparison with the previous title I enjoyed all the game had to offer and I would clearly recommend it as a really good metroidvania. I found the balance of the game a bit on the weak side, the exploration and the base enemy are way too easy and I played the whole game, probably aside from the final zone, without a true risk of death outside of boss and combat challenge arena. This fact in particular affects the most the feeling of the game compared to the first one. Probably balancing out the damage output of some weapon and of normal enemies would help with the game feeling itself.

One last notice should be made about the cutscene, I preferred the ones in pixel art from the previous title.

This game is more linier then the previous title but its not a bad thing, I prefer this one of the first one since its easier to travel and explore the world while expanding the combat making it more fun while still remaining challenging even tho not all areas are treated with the same love or attention they are still good. The story is still fantastic and the boss designs are still top tier specially with the first 3 main bosses and the second to last boss

Every NPC warns you not to trifle with the secret boss, Glorbo Voice of the Unwavering Ensconcement. And then you get there and it's a giant baby who cries blood??

Simplemente la cuspide del juego

An evolution that honors its roots while carving its own path. Enhanced visuals and smoother combat elevate the experience. A darker, richer world beckons exploration, with gruesome yet intriguing characters. Despite some monotony in the soundtrack, it delivers a satisfyingly challenging sequel.

??

this pixel art is breath taking

I would liken this a lot to Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

Sequels to some of the most popular metroidvanias with obviously larger budgets and a lot more polish, but also leaned harder into typical Metroidvania design, definitely borrowing more from Hollow Knight, simultaneously creating a better game while also losing a lot of its identity/what makes it unique. There could definitely be an analysis of this phenomenon and one day when I have a gaming youtube channel I'll probably make it.

While I do think this game is simultaneously better and worse than the first because of its increased incorporation of MV elements, the thing that put this over the edge for me is the combat. I found the combat a lot more fun and compelling in this game than the first, particularly the boss fights. While the boss fights in the first game were visually incredible, they weren't that compelling gameplay-wise, whereas I thought the boss fights in this one were insanely fun. It's the combat that makes this game better than the first one for me.

Team17 you can have my babies

felt like replaying the original
which is not particularly bad, i just wondered how they've expanded on that world, that artstyle, that gameplay and i'm a bit disappointed

Improvement on the original that falls ever so slightly short in areas. Still one of the greatest art direction of all time.

Phenomenal Game. An extremely underrated series that should be acknowledged more. This game was an upgrade to Blasphemous 1 in nearly every way, from making the game play less clunky to expanding even more on the story to introducing new, creative ways to make the platforming more engaging like making it so that the different types of weapons are apart of your platforming experience. Blasphemous 1 definitely has the better boss designs because of how creative and unique they are, but in terms of everything else, Blasphemous 2 makes sure to polish and excel at what it's predecessor excelled at. What a beautiful game.
