Cute and relaxing, lots of fun

This game helped me through a hard time in my life. This game is very comforting and feels like home.

This game is basically a phone app that was translated to other systems. Very annoying that they basically want you to come back every day. I bet this plays a lot better on a phone.

Hoped this would be my new Animal Crossing. It wasn't, it was fun for a couple of days though. You really have to be a hardcore fan of the genre to see this through


Definitely cozy! Feels like Animal Crossing but less demanding, I can play like an hour or so before bed and do everything I want/need to do in the game. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on things by not jumping in at certain times. The resource loop can be repetitive but to me that’s part of what makes it cozy. There are quests to complete every day and when you’re done working on those you can work on decorating the island, upgrading your tent or shop or filling your collection book. I love that nothing seems to close or become unavailable after a certain time like in AC, so I can relax and play before bed without the stress of time :)

Inspired by Animal Crossing, Cozy Grove is a life sim. You can cook, grow plants, decorate, and feed animals. You can hop on for 30 mins-60 mins everyday or focus a few days a week. Cozy Grove has an overarching story and connects all the island's ghosts. It's a chill and fun experience but it can be somber. The ghosts you are helping are, well...dead so there's talk about moving on, regrets, past pain, death, etc. I did feel a connection with some of the NPCs.

For 71 hours, it was definitely worth the money. The devs recently added some fixes and tools to help with the gameplay. The most consistent issue is selecting the object or pet. Sometimes you'll have an animal or NCP stand in front of an object you want and selecting can be difficult. Pretty minor problem but it happens a lot.

So the divide on progress being halted based on time should be well known at this point. The game only allows you to do a few quests before telling you to come back a day later. I was still on board and accepted this part of the game for being so cute, calming and liking the whole collecting aspect coupled with the badges you receive for any significant action. What made me quit is the type of quests you get and how long they can take. The quests 9 out of 10 are bear spirits/ghosts asking you to get them stuff. So we’re talking fetch quests here. I was still willing to play along despite this but they’re made more tedious due to them being hard to find, the quantity expected of you increases, you have to chase imps to get them and you won’t be able to get some items right away because you need other items to craft them and that can be related to quests you’re not allowed to do on the same day. It’s harder to find items in this game because the island is kind of in black and white until you do quests for the NPC and lots of items are hidden behind other items. The devs know this because you can pay an NPC to tell you where the hidden items are. I started making use of this and I went along again. But now I’m asked to chase after imps which there are many of and you don’t know who holds the items (I haven’t tried asking the same NPC about that, maybe it’s possible). But in order to get them to give you items, you have to give them something they want, be patient with them etc.

Seriously, enough is enough. What’s the point if the entire game is a fetch quest that is made more annoying than it should and you have time gated progress on top of it? I haven’t gotten to the part where the collectibles can also be season based and there are annoyances with inventory management. I’ve read others having a hard time collecting everything in the game because you need to be around in a certain season. Beware if you have OCD tendencies!

I don’t think the game is worth playing based on the gameplay loop being so weak on top of other flaws. I’m sure there is still an audience for this though. Just make sure you’re fully aware what you’re getting yourself into and if you’re fully on board.

I wanted to love this more than I did.

In Cozy Grove you play as a spirit scout whose boat floats away, stranding them on this island full of ghost bears. It’s up to you to help the spirits regain their memories so that they can move on to the afterlife. And of course, find a way off the island. I’m unsure if there is a “true ending” to Cozy Grove, as the game keeps going and going, even after you finishing helping everyone. But with the DLC, there’s even more spirits to meet and stories to unfold.

Visuals

Cozy Grove has a very pleasing art style. It’s very soft and has a watercolor quality to it. When the game starts there is no color, everything is grey. But as you help the bears regain their memories they bring light and color back to the island. You can also craft spirit lamps which will light up a small portion of the island. I really liked how adding color back to the world was part of the gameplay. It gives extra incentive to help these characters. Although, as you progress further, the island starts to look a little weird with patches of grey amongst the full color sections, if you haven’t crafted enough lamps to fill in the gaps.

Sound Effects + Music

The soundtrack for Cozy Grove is very calming and cozy as you’d expect. There’s not much variety and the tracks do get extremely repetitive. I found myself tuning out the more I played. It’s not like I spent hours per day playing, but I’d hear the same song multiple times during my hour-ish sessions. I do wish there had been just a few more songs to break things up.

I’m also not a huge fan of the sound effects. The shuffling footsteps of your spirit scout, spirit lamps lighting up, and the rain are nice. But the rest of it doesn’t really fit the vibe of the game. The menu selection sound is especially horrendous, sounding like a wet cough. I just don’t get it. You can turn the sound levels up or down to your liking, thankfully.

Gameplay + Controls

The gameplay of Cozy Grove is somewhat similar to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in that you have daily tasks to complete, plants to harvest, fish to catch, collectibles to collect, and neighbors to talk to. It’s much more focused on questing though, as the spirit bears will ask you to bring them certain items which can trigger their memories. You get a set number of tasks per day, and then you’ll have to wait for the next day to progress more. I actually like this mechanic a lot, since I can just pop in for 30-60 minutes to knock out the daily quests. Or I can keep playing and take care of other tasks around the island. It’s all up to you how you want to play.

There is a hidden object element to the fetch quests. Often the items will blend into the background or be hidden behind other objects. You’ll always have a hint of where to look, but sometimes these tiny objects are hard to spot. They really do blend in with the surroundings, so you’ll have to look carefully. I prefer to play Cozy Grove in handheld mode for this reason; it puts the island right in my eyeballs!

You can also decorate the island to your liking. This is actually one aspect of the game that I don’t play with at all. There are tons of crafting recipes to learn and so many furniture sets that you can make. However, the default island decor changes with time. As you meet more spirit bears, the island expands. The scenery can also shift day to day, so I don’t see the point in putting decorations, since their surroundings will be different in a couple of days making it look completely different. This does keep the fetch quests interesting since one day the “tree with a bird nest” will be in one spot, and another day it’ll be across the island.

The controls do take a bit of getting use to, as you need to access multiple menus and then press different buttons for different actions. Moving around the map is straight forward enough, using the left joystick to walk and the B button to run. You’ll need to press different buttons to access your backpack, achievements, quest log, and main menu. And the select button can be different depending on what menu you’re in and what action you’re taking. Then there’s activities like fishing, stone skipping, and taking photos which all have different but similar controls. Playing every day helps burn them to memory, but I still find myself choosing the wrong button at times.

Another minor complaint is the lag in the later game. As the island grows, it also loads more slowly. If your character is running, they may reach an area before it’s fully rendered. There’s also quite a bit of stuttering when talking to spirits. The game doesn’t completely stop, but for longer play sessions the number of hiccups do add up.

Replayability

Cozy Grove is one of those games that entices you to play every day. Each day you get your quests and unlock memories to move the story forward. It takes a lot of time. At the time of writing this post I was nearing day 300, but stopped playing since the daily quests were getting repetitive. I do still have a ton of missing collectibles, which I look forward to finding once I feel like getting back into the game. That will be sometime after I decide to get the DLC which adds even more characters and collectibles. This game will keep you busy for a good long time.

Given how long the game takes to complete, I don’t think I’d ever start over. There’s so much to do past the end credits that it doesn’t make sense to “beat” it and then go again. Maybe after doing everything, I’ll want to stick with the characters for longer. But the end is nowhere in sight yet.

Overall

Cozy Grove certainly lives up to its name. This game is just cozy and relaxing. There’s no pressure to rush through anything. Sure, some of the quests have time limits, but if you miss it, there’s no penalty. You just get a new task later on. I like to play this one in the evening, after dinner to wind down for the day. I’m also a huge fan of collecting and achievements, and there’s no shortage of either in Cozy Grove. Every time I finished one I had a sense of accomplishment.

I couldn't help but compare it negatively to Animal Crossing while playing. Some of the bears are really very cute, but the lack of substantial gameplay combined with the Switch struggling to maintain a decent framerate made this less enjoyable than I'd hoped.

A cozy game with notes of animal crossing, but unfortunately it takes a lot of time, because it’s a session game, but there is a big disadvantage for me, visual overload - sometimes my eyes hurt.

Every once in a while a game comes out that is so special that it makes you wish you were playing Animal Crossing for the GameCube again instead.

A good AC alternative, it has pretty storybook aesthetic, with a lot of little details that work very well for it. The characters are all fairly interesting, and I like that there's some story progression to each of them, but after some time of playing around in it, I think I've had my fill. Eventually the chores become a little convoluted, requiring multiple days and multiple actions between them to complete it, so it diminishes your returns as time goes on. Not bad by any means, but it stopped feeling worth it with how infrequently I've been playing it.

nightmare to play on switch. i wish there was more to do in a day because what you can is so limited and the gameplay loop kind of sucks. super cute artstyle though.

I only played two hours and I really wanted to like this one, the art style is stinking cute, but the amount of things you are allowed per day is little and later gets a bit samey. The game play loop simply did not capture me at all. Also this had performance issues on Switch.


Binged this pretty hard for a couple months but it became tiresome. Want to play again to see the fall festival/seasonal decor and collections but won’t be playing as an ongoing habit.

after 63 hours in game (played for 60 days, everyday for roughly an hour, sometimes a bit longer or less) i think i am finally done with this game (the story is not nearly done but, playing this everyday is starting to be a chore for me), i will probably go back to it to decorate / play on offline mode when i'm traveling with the deck because i can play it for hours without charging the steam deck, i'm burnt out and would rather do something else with my 1hour everyday. but don't get me wrong, i enjoyed every single hour i had so far! i was shocked at how much care went into this game, so many different flowers, hundreds and hundreds of them!! the item descriptions, the furniture! i love how decorating your island is basically a puzzle! this was such a refreshing cozy game. not everyone's cup of tea, if you're looking for something to binge-play, this is not it. if you are looking for a relaxing everyday routine, this is totally for you though

Animal Crossing but with ghost bears. Exactly my vibe. The glitches could get annoying, as could the wait times in between the bears' quests.
