I never got round to playing the original fable back in the day (over 20 years ago now wow) but absolutely loved fable 2 as a teen. So I was very excited to play this remaster for the upcoming episode of the gaming garnish podcast. I found myself having a bit of a love/hate relationship with this one by the end but I’ll start with what I loved…
The style or rather charm of the game is great, the voice acting is hilariously British (being born and raised here surely helps). It’s weird, mostly in a good way, still don’t know why you start off being called ‘chicken chaser’ but hell I’m along for the ride! Now the remaster is 10 years old as well at this point so I can’t critique it too much but some of the character models aren’t great, some specifically being nightmare-ish. However this is a product of its time and overall the game, mostly, gives off a lovely fairytale style in its visuals.
Now for something I didn’t like… the combat. Again you have to bear in mind the game is old but the combat really hasn’t aged well, it’s just very clunky. To be honest it’s not so bad at first when you’re fighting simple enemies and I like the easy way you can jump between melee, ranged and spell attacks on the fly. However, as the game progresses and you start getting mobbed and you’re attacked by harder enemies it just starts to fall apart. I think they were trying to do a lot of different things, very commendable for the time, but not everything worked out well. Stealth for example is horrendously bad and the mission they tie it to is so frustrating. It can really become quite a slog unfortunately. Especially the undead, they just constantly respawn immediately after killing them, the only way to get through them it seems is to just run past them. Unfortunately that’s just what I ended up doing towards the end of the game, running past a lot of enemies.
The story isn’t anything to write home about but it’s done rather well, it’s a testament to the game that despite my problems with the combat I still wanted to get through it to see it to its end. It was good to see where the story of fable all began and I really liked the main villain. Sprinkle in the choice system, which is a little black and white, and some funny side quests and you’ve got yourself a decent time.
Lastly, I’ll quickly mention, it can be a bit of a buggy game too unfortunately. Textures will randomly just all turn off sometimes and the frame rate is a bit choppy.
As mentioned at the start I had a love/hate relationship with fable at the end. Love being the world it was building, the choices, it was doing a lot for a game of its time. The hate being combat being hit and miss and sometimes the game just feeling like a big slog to get through. Overall I think this is a good game for its time but I think it’s heavily held up by its nostalgia. And having not played the game originally I just found it hard to overcome its shortcomings. Fable 2 is the better game to get into the series in my opinion but again that’s the power of nostalgia. It was nice to see where it all began though.

Not actually a bad game by any means, but a bad port/HD remaster. Besides the graphics being better-ish (character faces still ugly), the game doesn’t add anything meaningful and is just buggier than playing the OG Xbox or PC version of The Lost Chapters. Plus, it had an achievement tied to a Windows 8 app that no longer exists which is real cool.
This game was way too good for its time. The open world, environments, gameplay, content, etc all blow Skyrim way the fuck out of the water. Absolute masterpiece that deserves to be placed up with the greats. Graphics are a bit dated, although the artstyle definetly props it up, and after all, it’s still the best looking game in this series. Bravo, Microsoft. You’ve released this classic, and have never topped it since.
Overall had a lot of fun with this. There's such a strong sense of personality in this game, and I loved exploring Albion, getting stronger and fighting enemies. The story was simple, cliché, but functional, and there were some amazing characters that really got me invested in the world. It was also a very satisfying sense of progression - I really enjoyed going back to enemies that kicked my ass when I'd got better equipment and skills, and enacting my revenge!
However, the combat and targeting systems did feel a little clunky, and haven't aged well. I also found the ending section quite underwhelming, as there was so much to explore, but not much to gain from doing so, as opposed to the rest of the game, which was overflowing with things to do around every corner.
Although the progression felt great, towards the end of the game I had more health potions than I knew what to do with, which did make combat incredibly easy and a bit tedious at times.
I did also run into some freezing issues towards the start of the game, which made it a very rocky start - though this did stop towards the middle of the game itself.
Overall, very fun, but marred by a few issues, and overall a bit too easy. Recommend at least one playthrough!

I remember playing and loving this game on the initial Xbox which I never owned but got to play a bit on when visiting my brother. I really enjoyed the game, the world and the story telling back in the days, and I always thought of playing this game once I had the time and chance. Unfortunately, when trying this out, when it got playable on the Game Pass, it didn't catch me as much as it used to; maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it. After a longer break I had lost all interest and picked up another game...
But I want to get back to this one, someday...

I played for about two hours. Fable has aged poorly.
The character models look horrible. The storytelling is poor, with the plot and characters having no depth whatsoever. Combat is repetitive and simplistic. All of the enemies are damage sponges. The karma system has uninteresting black-and-white morality.
The intro is a dull slog. It's a series of unskippable tutorials for the most basic of gameplay systems. Quests are boring; they're MMORPG-eqsue in how mundane they feel.
Zones are tiny and are broken up by loading screens. It makes the game world feel small and fragmented. It feels poor even by 6th-gen standards. Surely the Xbox can do better, seeing as to how it was the strongest console of that generation.

I asked myself multiple times while playing this game why exactly I was still indeed playing. It's not the story, where the satirical trappings are pretty much the only interesting quality. It's not the combat, full of health sponge, constantly blocking enemies. But it's definitely a... consistent experience, and maybe that's what I needed at the moment. Plus, the music is excellent.
