This game was a big disappointment, the fact that I finished it was too much for me because from the first 20 minutes I wanted to uninstall it. It totally feels like a mobile game, it's boring, ugly, basic and bad. The design of the world is horrendous and even depressing because of how bad it is, the game is boring from start to finish, I spent weeks playing it because it didn't last more than a one-hour session without having to close it, almost all the weapons are bad and not even They don't even provide a "pleasure" when killing except for the shotgun, the designs of these are ugly, the designs of the characters, whether enemies or allies, were also horrendous, the story was almost non-existent and the characters did not have a minimum of charisma, in addition that they were useless, they had terrible AI along with the enemies. Little variety of things and basic and horrible mechanics, the mechanic of reloading weapons is interesting but nothing special, when receiving damage instead of the screen turning red like any common game, an ugly red logo begins to appear in the middle of the screen that does not indicate anything. Full of bugs, very bad scenarios and more than anything repetitive and ugly, the worst boss fights I have seen in a video game, terrible controls, the character turned and covered himself with the walls all the time without me wanting it, the difficulty is very strange, because you would have walked like you were Rambo but then they would kill you instantly out of nowhere. And many more things that I'm not going to add, but this game is garbage, I can't understand what people see in it, I even read that it was better than Vanquish (? That's an insult to Vanquish, and no, I'm not comparing this game to Vanquish at the time of writing this review, but this game is garbage.
Game doesn't care about its plot. Enemy types are diverse and landscapes are cool and colorful. Controls are sloppy (run, take cover, and dodge roll are all bound to A). Game feels a bit too unforgiving with insta-gib enemies at times.
Verdict: Hasn't aged well. Too many other great 3rd person shooters you could be playing from that generation, let alone that console, to warrant spending time with cough Vanquish cough. Don't waste your time with it unless you really want to experience all 3 original games in order.

so I never actually played this game when it first came out. I only finished it recently and tbh, it's really dated. the controls are fine for the most part but the level design can be really messy and really cheat you out of deaths. Your squad mates are also absolutely useless and will constantly run in and die. Can still be a fun time, and is a piece of xbox history, but a pretty mediocre game by today's standards.
This game was great! The only parts I didn't like were how magnetic the cover mechanic was (I've died so many times because I could not get off of a wall or cover object) and the fact that the turrets did not have a crosshair so it felt like I was guessing where it was aiming. And FINALLY, (it may be a hot take) I'm not too fond of the co-op split-up moments in the campaign. I played with a friend and it was so annoying; if ONE of us died (even though we both had a companion NPC with us which couldn't revive us, which alone doesn't make sense), we instantly lost and had to go back to the previous checkpoint
At the time of release, I think this game did a fantastic job of breaking up the standard shooter formula, where FPS's were in charge. It was the first time I had played a 3rd person shooter that felt fun and encouraged fast paced gameplay. I don't know how well the original would hold up today, but for the time it was an awesome experience.
The game that brought the sniping gameplay mechanics to all remaining games later. If you look at the game at the time of its release, it becomes clear why it was a breakthrough in the genre. Third-person view, convenient shooting, maximalism in everything, starting with the huge costumes of the main characters, ending with the environment and enemies, who are practically not spared on hard.

A brutal experience. In that sense it is probably equivalent to the feeling of the Gears themselves as they fight against the endless horde of Locust, but it was an exhausting experience to me playing through this game. Every victorious encounter and pop-up telling me I had reached a checkpoint was met mostly by a big sigh of relief, rather than a victorious fist-pump.
I assume this game must be a blast to play with a friend; Gears of War really seems to dig its team mechanic, but it mostly winds up being frustrating as Dom, Baird, and Gus are not exactly...useful. They'll distract enemies, but offensively they won't really do much good and they'll die quickly, leaving you to have to go revive them. Nobody revives you when you go down though...
That's all coupled with the fact that the Locust are brutally tough. Your bullets heal them, in fact, or that's what it seems like at least, as you unload bullet after bullet into their bodies or heads, after which you'll duck back in cover to reload and recover some health. There's a nice flow to the combat, and as I said, the difficulty of it makes sense in-universe, but it also never felt satisfying to me. The shotgun was about the only weapon that could give that 'oomph' to enemies that I was looking for, but even then really only on one type of enemy.
Gears of War gets criticized for being one of those games that killed colour for a while, and while I totally get it, I also think this game looks really good. I have to imagine it must've been a kind of 'first time Final Fantasy X' moment or something to see this in 2006. Obviously the graphics are dated now, but it's very clear that the quality is still there, and that it was impressive on release.
I'm not sure I could recommend playing Gears of War nowadays if you don't have any nostalgia for it. It could be interesting from a history perspective, as an Xbox 360 exclusive, the cover mechanic that this game seemingly brought to the fore,... but the genre has evolved, and it might be more enjoyable to play any of those games than it would be to go back to this one. But if you love a tough challenge, this could be a really good option.

Much like my recent venture into the Halo franchise, this was another one of my dives into an Xbox classic that I missed because I grew up playing on PS3. Gears 1 shows the backbone of a really fun combat system, a story that actually has characters, and is quite a fun time. The boss fights are not exactly the best part of the game, for crying out loud the last boss is just a meat sponge with nothing interesting. But overall I had a good time. Really wish 2 & 3 were available on PC as well, because I guess I just have to make the jump to Gears 4 & 5 now. Good time, recommend.
