An aesthetically pleasing spin on a simplistic platform shooter that makes you think of every move. The random terrain generation mixed with illuminous platforms forces you to tackle one problem at a time. Sometimes it's wise to wait and think, while others you have to act quickly and get rewarded for doing so. The loadout system is simple but allows enough choice for strategizing while also being a good pick-me-up upon death. Using currency as both respawns and purchases allows you to really value the worth of a run. It could use more substance in enemy/item variety but ultimately a great game to pick up when in need of instant engagement.
Incredibly smooth gamefeel + colorful, charming, minimalist graphics + varied styles of play work to create a flow state (egged on by the combo mechanic), hitting that sweet spot between relaxing and challenging. I suspect I'll be playing this game fairly regularly for a while to come.
Still need to try the sequel.

It's not a terrible roguelike. It has a lot of style, which goes a long way, and the gameplay is simple but feels pretty good. You run around weird proc gen caverns and shoot down enemies with guns which are satisfying to spray projectiles with. That all is good, but it's got a core problem: It's a roguelike, and doesn't hook you well enough to get you invested. The minimalistic presentation, while an asset aesthetically, also makes the game more impenetrable, which exacerbates this. Too bad!
Played this live on stream on the 23rd of March (twitch.tv/sleepy_nice, come thru).
Total banger of a game, but might just be a little too hard for me to get much further through than what I've already seen. The dynamic of GoNNER rewards speed but punishes imprecision, and is a teensy bit too stressful for me - it's in my nature to try and rack up combos to collect the glyphs but I'm not able to balance that impulse with precise movement.
Loved the feel of everything, the jumps and the guns and the wall-jumping are all really finely tuned. Love the painterly style and the way the levels build around you as you traverse through them. I liked how little was communicated to you, letting you learn as a player what you're meant to be doing as you experiment. I would have appreciated a LITTLE bit more information when it came to certain masks or accessories, because the thrill of discovery was marred a little bit by the chance you had to take on a new item when you're already in the middle of a run.
There are still a couple mechanical mysteries to me. For instance, on my last run (where I managed to get the furthest I've been able to reach, just past the 2nd boss room and into level 3) I got such a good combo going that the colour scheme of the rooms changed to green. I'm not sure what that meant! It might have meant nothing.
But yeah, highly recommend giving this game a whirl but I'm still learning to be any good at it. Let's see if I ever get there.

I think now that GoNNER 2 is out, I likely won't be picking this back up unless it's to convince myself whether or not to get its sequel.
It's fun and kinetic, and very stressful in a good way, but ultimately there isn't enough roguelite meta progression, or roguelike depth and mystery, to keep me coming back for more than a few rounds at a time.

I bought this game on a whim when I was browsing the Switch eShop one day, and it quickly became one of my favorites in my library.
It's not the most innovative rogue-liite in terms of gameplay (not even a particularly innovative action platformer) but where it does innovate is in presentation and art direction.
I get lost in this game, it just sucks me in. The atmosphere, the simple designs, the complete lack of text. Depending on how I like the second one I might just forget about it and come back to finish the original.
