3rd game I ever played. Was way to young to have played this.

Only acquired for the blood code. The Super Nintendo version is superior on all other fronts. Reference its log for thoughts.

Very close to the arcade game so the same criticism applies (a cheat code allowed re-enabling the blood and violence).

Arguably the best version of the home ports. I've heard the Jakks Pacific version is remarkably good, but as it came out in 2005 it's very much an afterthought. The Sega CD edition was nicer looking with better music, but was crippled by load times. The less said about the SNES version the better. No, THIS was the cream of the crop. With its tongue in cheek blood and fatality code entered, it was an accurate and gorgeous looking release, the pride of any Megadrive/Genesis owners collection.

The series has come a long way since its original game, and although there are now easily accessible, superior versions of the first, the legend of the Mega Drive/Genesis port will always ring true. The Blood Code has become a fondly remembered piece of gaming history, retaining the kung fu movie flash that made the arcade game an instant success, while also rounding out a very respectable home port that captures the look, feel, and tone of the game. The Sega port even retains character bios! A dated, but vital piece of the MK puzzle.

good start to the mortal kombat franchise. Even if simplistic in nature, with a small cast and not so many stages, you'll have fun here

When I first saw the cartridge for this game as a kid, I couldn't believe this could possibly be the first MK game. I had known and played 2, 3 and 3U, but MK 1 seemed like an almost legendary mythological artifact. So in my disbelief I asked the seller which entry in the series this was, and she apathetically replied "8th". I'm not sure whether she didn't know or didn't care, perhaps both. So I asked my mom to buy it for me and went home happily anticipating what new features MK 8 has compared to 3U.

Anyway, I'm glad they're remaking this game now, because it was pretty outdated even when I first played it, let alone now. Pretty unbalanced and clunky, with some annoying button-mashing mini-games, but its general presentation and lore are still impressive, and the basic gameplay formula still creates an engaging experience, despite quite a minuscule amount of content. Still, it doesn't really give you anything that the following entries don't.
