A more polished and fun game than any official pokémon releases, all while being created and kept by volunteers motivated solely by their love for this franchise and the community around it.
Battling is arguably the best aspect of Pokemon. Catching them all is fun too, but using your newly caught and trained battle is what makes Pokemon the longest running series in my gaming collection. As of recent, building a proper competitive is insanely grindy and monotonous AND now with the requirement of Nintendo Switch Online to battle others, Pokemon Showdown cuts out all the nonsense. I come back to this game regularly
I remember playing this back when I was younger, It was really fun! I made cool friends and I loved how competitive it was. I'm washed now though but I sometimes think about this game every now and then. :)
The Smogon mod team is insufferable for the most part but the website itself is extremely useful.

By far the best community project around competitive Pokémon, its easy to use, listens to the community when it comes to balancing the meta (most of the time at least). I also would like to add that having access to old gens pvp emulator and a huge variety of metagames ranging from for fun to competitive is incredible!

Randomized formats are a fun little time killer and as a tool to play competitive Pokemon, this is as good as it gets. Side servers are where things get even more fun but I think this rating stands whether you include them or not. Pokemon is a flawed game competitively but you should enjoy this website even if you aren't a diehard competitive player.
I have been banned from this game's chatrooms so many times I'm amazed I'm still allowed in.

Best Pokémon game and it's not even close
more fun than the real games by leaps and bounds. Dozens upon dozens of gamemodes, teambuilding so easy a child could do it, 0 downtime to get into a match, and it's all free in your google chrome browser. Not to mention all of the quality of life that's actually in showdown compared to the in-game battler, like moveset recording, damage numbers, and the ability to call your oponent slurs over text chat. pokemon is a pretty horrible game to get into competetively but showdown is an incredible way to get started, and a beautiful platform to stay on.
The biggest complaint I have is how showdown is inexoribly tied to pokemon, and how "ou", standard play, is inexoribly tied to tiering policy that can't fix fundamental issues with pokemon (sleep clause, powercreep, kingambit, etc.). i'd love to see someone with power take a more constructive approach to making a meta with real patch notes, rather than a council of wizards unanimously obliterating all sleep moves ever.

Hardly counts as a game to be honest. It's a simulator that's very good at simulating. I very much like the customization options and the team builder.

da igual lo que los idiotitas que no saben de competitivo digan, showdown y smogon ha sido de las mejores cosas que le pudo pasar al competitivo de pokemon...
deje de jugar competitivo en el 2020 y ya ni siquiera me interesa ni se nada de lo nuevo de la saga, pero yo fui alguien que empezó en el competitivo desde 2012 y showdown fue una de las mejores herramientas que pudieron existir ya que no solo podias probar y armarte teams, sino que el nivel solia ser más alto que en el de la ds/3ds y estaba dividido entre tiers (no me malinterpreten, aunque jugase competitivo y competía en mi país, mi tier favorita era NU y UU e incluso solía usar a pokemon de esas tiers al competir de manera seria). además, la música que usa son de la 5ta gen, que más puedes pedir?
incluso solía meterme a la página a hacer combates rápidos cuando iba en secundaria y más adelante cuando trabajaba para matar el tiempo
PD: creo que una de las cosas más bizarras que me pasaron fue que un día habia buscado partida y cuando entro me sale un mensaje automático en el chat que decía que esta partida estaba siendo retransmitida y no recuerdo el nombre de la persona pero era de alguien famoso de la scene competitiva de habla inglesa y obviamente fui humillado, me puse nervioso al ir a su stream y ver que realmente si estaba siendo visto por unos cuantos miles de personas xD
