part 1 was meh and part 2 was great, thats it

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't log a DLC expansion pass, but this is so good! The characters, the locations, and the story are all amazing, and the epilogue was a nice little cherry on top (emphasis on "little" though). Teal Mask, Indigo Disk, and Mochi Mayhem have got to set the standard for Pokemon DLC in the future!

I honestly shoulda put my review and added this DLC on my account after beating Indigo Disk in December 2023, but good DLC, especially Indigo Disk

I reviewed the two DLCs separately, but I just wanted to touch on the epilogue here since that doesn't have its own Backloggd page. I loved the epilogue. It's the exact kind of story I'd love to see more of in Pokemon going forward. It's a silly little episodic adventure, centering around a Pokemon's particular abilities, where you and your friends get swept up and have to figure out a solution. It builds on the friendships you forged with the cast throughout the base game and the DLCs, and lets you see where all these characters are after their arcs are concluded. There's absolutely nothing like this in the entire franchise, and whereas I don't think it's anything super spectacular in a vacuum, it's super spectacular by Pokemon standards specifically, and it's got me feeling better about this series than I have in a long time.

This DLC was absolutely phenomenal, especially the Indigo Disk which was absolutely thrilling. Both for story and the new areas.

DLC was a really mixed bag storywise, but the new areas were both cool and I can’t wait for Pecharunt

Wasn't expecting the DLC story to be as good as it was. With some genuinely good plot moments. Been a long time since I've cared about a Pokemon plot.

However this does run worse than the base game which I didn't think was possible, but it was still fun regardless.

its quite good and definitely cleans up a lot of the messy points of scarlet and violet, but its ending is pretty disappointing honestly

After rolling credits on this and playing the epilogue, I find it weird that they even called this The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero in the first place - I really enjoyed the last act of Scarlet & Violet (even if I thought getting there was kind of a slog), and the DLC doesn’t really do anything with the interesting and weird stuff the game starts dropping on you in its last couple of hours. What you get instead is pretty compelling in its own right though, and the core characters that are introduced throughout the two new chunks of game are so full of personality and love that it’s hard not to get caught up in a package that’s otherwise just fine.

Kitakami and Blueberry Academy are much fuller and better realised than Paldea, but the environment design is still the same kind of weirdly frictionless and formless slop that makes it really hard to ever feel like you’re on an adventure. The Pokémon battles in The Indigo Disk are genuinely challenging and dynamic, maybe the most fun the series has ever been - but this is largely because they’re centred around Double Battles instead of the usual Singles format. The more interesting and strategic demands of the doubles format unfortunately brought to mind a lot of the weaknesses of the legacy core mechanics and math happening behind the scenes which has stayed largely untouched since 2003 - why can’t the game as normal be this fun? For everything neat the DLC does, the bad bones of the base game exert their presence at every moment - there’s mostly the same good things and bad things that there were in the core game at launch, so if you already thought this sucked there’s probably nothing here to convince you otherwise. I will still buy the next one without question because I am a horrible little hog snort sniff slorp

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero was truly a cordial crescendo, from quaint, quiet Kitakami to the bodacious, bedazzling Blueberry Academy. This DLC had the same things that I adored about Scarlet and Violet, and then some.

I'll start with the difficulty. Usually, main campaign Pokémon battles are a joke. I sit back, mash A, and OHKO the competition, like a conveyor belt of lambs to the slaughter-machine. This was rarely the case for this DLC. I EV-trained some Pokémon, and thought I raised them as well as I possibly could, and even then, I'd still be at risk of getting thwacked. More often than not, I'd end some very intense battles with only one of my mons left. It's a sense of tension truly unprecedented for modern Pokémon, and it reinvigorated my desire to learn how to properly teambuild.

On top of that was the story. The writers and localizers they've got on board were at their A-game. Every named character I encountered in my time with this DLC was memorable, well-written, and adorable... Kieran's kind of the poster boy of 'em all, and some of the things he says are outright refreshing to me. It feels like he's a personification of the developers being self-aware of the innate privilege a character gets in-universe by being the protagonist. He's absolutely fantastic.

Even the featured legendary Pokémon involved in the stories had a lot to love about them. Ogerpon, Okidogi, Fezandipiti, Munkidori.... Even Terapogos a little. I'm used to solving the problems of legendary Pokémon, but I'm not used to it feeling quite as personal as it is here.

I admit that I actually don't have as much to say about the gameplay additions as I should... perhaps because I had the plot in mind moreso than things such as completing the Pokédex, Tera Raids, or extra stuff like that.

That said, it's in the little things that Pokémon decided to reward you for spending $35.
Items that I'd have had to do an unholy grind for in the maingame are more common in the DLC. Appreciated. You get the chance to rematch folks after everything's completed. Totally righteous. And, naturally, it brings back a whoooole lot of Pokémon. Thank God.

One more thing I'll mention is the epilogue... I'm a sucker for writing, and character interaction; this short little story beat had it in droves. My time with it was short, but it's thanks to this epilogue that I'll fondly remember this DLC campaign for eons.

I hope that everyone who enjoyed the OG Scarlet and Violet gets the chance to enjoy this, too. It's so, so worth it.

It's basically more of Scarlet and Violet, both for better (great characters, fun core gameplay loop) and worse (technical issues everywhere you look).

If you liked the base game, you'll enjoy this, and if you didn't like it this won't be changing your mind.

I gave both packs a 4/5 so this is too I think that makes sense
