every sonic game worth playing in one collection

Almost everyone has played one of the original Sonic games at some point in their life, and they keep getting released on all of the major consoles. It’s only logical that another compilation would be released prior to Sonic 4, and this time the DS gets the classic Sonic treatment. With the amount of practice they’ve had with re-releasing these games, SEGA would be able to create a perfect port on even a Casio calculator. So is this port carefully done, or simply a rush job.

The collection includes Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles; as well as lock-on for both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 (no Blue Sphere game in this compilation). Oddly, Sonic 3 & Knuckles – what many fans deem as the definitive way to enjoy both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles – is named “Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3” while the description makes it sound like it will only let you play the Sonic 3 levels as Knuckles. Luckily this is not the case, and this game will allow you to play through Sonic 3 & Knuckles as any of the characters. The only extras in this version are 27 concept art images from the original games displaying the classic Sonic, while the box and all new logos show his modern stick-like form.

So how do these games perform on the DS? The game has obviously had a change in aspect ratio to make use of the whole screen, and this is actually done particularly well as all game elements still appear fine. Some of the text is slightly cropped or misplaced, but this doesn’t impact the games in any way. The biggest problem is the framerate. Sonic the Hedgehog seems to constantly struggle to keep the framerate up to your speed. It’s still perfectly playable and a lot of fun, but it really isn’t ideal. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 fares much better – the only noticeable slowdown is when you lose all your rings. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is almost unplayable as Sonic and Tails, but runs pretty well when you stick with one character.

The framerate issues are a big shame as the graphics still look extremely crisp and clear, especially on the DS’ small screen. The audio performs much better, and the music is a joy to listen to when using headphones. The only audio problem is that collecting the Power Sneakers will make the music higher pitched, as opposed to increasing the tempo of the music. Which sounds really odd each time you collect them.

Lacking from both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the multiplayer. This could have been implemented over Wi-Fi, and possibly even improved (to give both players a full screen, as opposed to splitting one screen in half). Instead it seems that SEGA just couldn’t be bothered adapting the code for the DS’ Wi-Fi. The amount of effort is even more evident in the PAL version as the Genesis box arts in the menus have not been replaced with Mega Drive ones. It’s a tiny, unimportant thing but it still shows that SEGA don’t really care about how well these classic titles are ported.

While this classic games still look, sound and feel brilliant; the quality of the port brings it down. There are much better ports and compilations on other consoles so the only reason to purchase this collection is if you just NEED to own Sonic the Hedgehog on every device in creation.

A fantastic package, and one I was grateful to own growing up, as I had no clue how elusive and valuable Sonic 3 on a handheld would end up being in the future. Not perfect versions of the games by any means, but still a fantastic way to play them back in the day.

Pretty solid collection of games, but there are better ways to play all the games in this collection.

shoddy presentation, and would've liked if sonic cd was present, but at the end of the day you can't go wrong with the sonic trilogy on ds

This was my favorite way to play Sonic 2 as a kid, and the first way I beat it. Nowadays the bad audio emulation drives me crazy. Very playable considering the circumstances I'm sure this was developed under, not worth revisiting today.

I originally got this game when I was like 6. It took me 8 years to figure out you had to hit start to actually play the game. I thought it was just full of trailers for the games.

Solid collection that got a bunch of us into this series.

This is sort of a similar case for me with Sonic Genesis on GBA where while not at all on the same level of quality, the collection itself isn't particularly great - it's an alright way of playing the games but the emulation is still pretty mixed in terms of resolution, framerate and sound issues - but at the same time it was also my introduction to the rest of the classic games and I played the absolute shit out of it when I was 10-11 years old so I really can't knock it too hard.

"Passable" is the best word I'd use to describe this collection. You get Sonic 1 2 3&K (though with 3&K as separate titles) with save states which is nice. You also get some concept art, aaaaand…that's about it. It fulfills the "Classic Sonic games on the go" quota but it does the absolute bare minimum, and on top of that the actual quality of the games themselves are hit or miss. It's nowhere NEAR Genesis GBA levels of bad, but there are noticeable framerate and sound issues that permeate throughout all titles. It does what it needs to do and I guess that's all I can really say about it in the end.

I remember playing this a lot and loving it as a kid but I noticed some framerate issues when I went back to it. Not unplayable but not perfect either.

It's a Sonic collection I guess...

it's fine, nothing wrong with it, I'm just not sure why you'd ever play this nowadays

a better portable experience than origins

Nice to be able to play all the Classic Sonic games (excluding Mania) on a portable console so small

never actually properly played through any of the games also cd is missing

Not the worst way to play the classics, but you could probably do better

2nd best way to experience 2D Sonic before the Steam ports

Got the job done pre Nintendo Switch, but the DS was definitely capable of providing more polished versions of these games.

It is a good port of the original sonic Trilogy with 3+Knuckles, but sadly no CD. The games play and sound pretty good. The content is pretty bare bones but if you want the classic sonic on the go, this was the first good option that wasn't using a Nomad.

I think this is the last time 3&K was packaged with the michael jackson music included, so it has a neat spot in Sonic history. It also incorperated a save system for the non-3 games(though the system is better than the sonic 3 save system because you can save between acts and you don't need to manage your lives). This is a great collection, despite the odd exclusion of CD. (also, i think it's funny that 3&K is called Knuckles in Sonic 3)

A great collection of Sonic classics, on the go! I think this was how I beat Sonic 1 for the first time. I took this game everywhere with me, when I had it. Good times...

Honestly a lot worse than I was expecting it to be, this compilation ages like MILK. It does have some novelty as it was a compilation of the OG trilogy on the DS and it is one of the easier ways to pick up and play 3 and Knuckles if you’re a filthy casual like me, but now with multiple ports of Sonic 1 and 2 and great fan versions of 3 and Knuckles, the choppy frame rate, annoying input lag and awful audio compression definitely wears the novelty down a bit. Yeah, I’ll wait until Sonic Origins comes out to revisit 3 and Knuckles because dear god this was not fun.

IDK, maybe I just didn't get Sonic when I first played this but it wasn't very fun
