I'm an evil doctor with a rad genius and bad minions
To help me sink the planet into my dominion
A baddie with an I.Q. like you've never seen
I'm the meanest, vilest villain that's ever been on your screen
I'm iconic, with my bionic animatronics,
got a chronic knack to catch the hedgehog they call "Sonic"
My temper is atomic, my mustache is on fire
Welcome to the new world, Eggman Empire

Same things that I said about the original version of Sonic Mania, it still is pretty much the same game, so still really good for the most part.
I do want to mention tho, the DLC is really good. I really like the inclusion of Mighty and Ray, they are both fun and pretty different from the main trio.
I also really like the Encore Mode. All the new versions of these levels are pretty cool and I do like the new bonus stages...Even if getting the chaos emeralds in Encore Mode is a lot harder than in the main game.
I do kinda wish you could also play with two random characters at the same time in the main game tho, the same way you can in Encore Mode. It's a cool idea, and I hope they bring it back for a future 2D Sonic.
So yeah, great game, great DLC, final super Sonic boss still sucks balls. Will replay it again some day.

this will sound paradoxal but maybe, even though I'm a massive Sonic fan, 2D Classic gameplay might not be my cup of tea ?
don't get me wrong, when Mania's good, I'm having a blast. the game looks stellar, sounds stellar and playing as the classic gang has never been this good. add the welcomed new features of this enhanced version (Mighty!!!) and this is truly such a good game.
BUT.
with all of that said, I think that the level progression and overall game structure has to be somewhat updated. this wasn't what this game was going for, it didn't want to reinvent the wheel, it's first and foremost a return to the classic, but I somehow wish we could get a completely new take on 2D gameplay for this franchise.
I don't like the lives system, some levels feel far too long, some of the bosses here are honestly not that fun (one is even atrocious) and having to collect all the Emeralds every time you wanna do the true ending isn't fun (I tried to do that multiple times and never ended up seeing it). also I would've loved to see more original zones, cause the few ones we do get are awesome.
so yeah, good game! but no Mania 2 please! either evolve from this without the nostalgic parts or do something crazy and different!

Having just recently played through each of the classic 2D Sonic titles up to CD, my immediate impression of Sonic Mania booting into its first level was that it felt like an evolution of the game’s original formula from the 90’s. The aesthetic and feel of the game almost seems too good to be true, but the experience holds up from start to finish.
Only a handful of the game’s stages are fully new and original, with the bulk of them being remixes of classic Sonic stages. The remixes feel like clear improvements over the source material and introduce new mechanics for a familiar but fresh experience. The handful of brand new stages are all incredibly unique and a blast to play through. There are also a bunch of new boss fights that were challenging but good fun. I still can’t believe they were able to make Flying Battery Zone good...
Regrettably, I did encounter one softlock where my character was stuck in map geometry in Chemical Plant Zone. I had to restart the stage, but it was early on and so it didn’t have so much impact on my experience.
Also worthy of note is the Drop Dash technique, which allows you to instantly start into a dash on landing from a jump, allowing for more dynamic movement. The new characters in Plus, Mighty and Ray, also have their own unique movement options and likewise feel just as good to play.
Finally, I was delighted to find that the game comes with great CRT filter options that mimic the warm and fuzzy TVs we used to play the original Sonic games on. I still can’t believe that Sonic Origins was released without any such option, but I digress...
If you enjoy classic 2D Sonic or 2D platformers in general, you should find Sonic Mania to be a blast and absolutely worth your time. Give it a shot!

The nostalgia!!! This is Sonic in it's truest form, welcome back! Everything you expect in a Sonic game, the music, the speed, the panic inducing water levels (nightmares resurfacing) all packaged together with that edgy attitude. I feel the Sonic formula has had some fine tuning by quality of life improvements making this a game for the classic yet modern gamers alike.
The game is an ideal length and difficultly not leaving players too frustrated. The main campaign (with some extras) took about 15 hours. Completionists will devote more time (maybe 25hours).
Encore mode felt a little like deja vu from the main mode and only did the first few zones to try other character mechanics.
Couple of issues I had is about level speed/flow. There are not so often moments you the level will suddenly halt you for some tedious platforming and a badly placed spike or enemy. Luckily these are not too common.
The other factors is, although the level design is ingenious, I found the levels to be far too long and can time out or get close to timing out due to the levels length. It needs to be slightly smaller or free-flowing to speed though.
Loved the game and may come back to it in a few years or when there is a flat patch in gaming.

I think that if anyone asked me what game would be the best intro to sonic as a series, I would say sonic mania in a heartbeat. This game actually helped me to understand the classic sonic gameplay, which was something I had never cared about prior to this game's release. Amazing music, fun levels, fuckin beautiful spritework. Overall just a great game and the encore DLC is just icing on the cake.
