When I think about those special stages I start to break out in hives.

Great fun, good contrast to Mario at the time, although it aged worse. Music is still killer

Who thought it was even remotely okay to put this here?

everything after green hill zone is counteractive to the core mechanic of running fast

Sonic The Hedgehog spin-dashes straight Into mediocrity

A pioneer for 2D platformers, it is in the same vein as the original Super Mario Bros where it isn't as good as its sequels, but is still incredibly important and still holds up to this day.

I’ve played this game more times than I can count, Sonic 1 perfectly captures the highs and lows this series can present, that feeling of flow and freedom brought to a crashing halt by a stupid block or strange spring placement. Yet I can play Sonic 1 no problem because despite its age, I still enjoy the gameplay.

The simple controls and momentum based platforming make Sonic a fun character to control, though the lack of the Spindash can lead to getting a bit stuck in certain situations. But when you roll and pick up more and more speed, it’s satisfying.

That is when the game lets you, Green Hill Zone and Starlight Zone are the only stages that really feel like they were built with this design in mind.

The rest all have strange obstacles and structures that cut your speed in an instant, though through experience you can find ways to take shortcuts through momentum. The infamous Labyrinth Zone I think was supposed to simulate the idea of rushing between air pockets, but it doesn’t really work, it’s very slow paced.

The game is hard your first few times through but I think anyone can beat this, and I think you should. The bosses aren’t too taxing and despite the inconsistencies in level design, it’s not a bad game at all.

The music is iconic and the game is vibrant and eye catching, Sonic 1 has aged, but I do really enjoy it.

Good start to my favorite series but it’s not the best

It's fun but with how good Sonic 2 and 3 are in comparison, it feels like it's missing something. I do love the level design though, especially with the first 3 stages, Green Hill Zone gets brought back in every single game for a reason

Incredible this generic 3rd gen platformer managed to become the titan it did, especially with a slogan of "gotta go fast". If the game is built on speed, why is every single stage designed to be explicitly anti-speed? It's so baffling and it's almost impressively creative how many means the devs concocted to halt or fuck with your momentum. After just playing Adventure 2 and starting to get how the stages have a flow to them if you know what you're doing, I question if I'm just bad or if that just wasn't in mind at all. I hate that it uses the arcade life system, demanding save states. I hate that half the OST is like 4 looping measures when the half that isn't bangs. I hate how you can't walk up slopes or comfortably spin dash or dispatch certain enemies. The game is passable, but so opposite of what I would have expected a 2D sonic game to be after all these years.

Played the mobile port on my Kindle Fire a while back, and defeated the final boss. After failing to recover all of the Chaos Emeralds, the "Try Again" screen was less than encouraging, and I did not have the motivation to restart, so I will not be returning to this game.

A tough platformer and a charming take on the platforming genre at the time, and even now.

Esse jogo me gerou muitos sentimentos.

A trilha é sonora é meio a meio pra mim.

Quase.

(Sim, eu sei que eu fiz a resenha no jogo errado, mas agora tá certo)

Eggman did nothing wrong.
Cons: Greenhill zone, start of the Sonic fanbase, Eggman loses
Pros: Marble and Labyrinth Zone are peak gaming, Eggman, Ost, First game looks visually appealing compared to Marioslop 1

the game that made me realize Green Hill Zone is in fact a stage

The proof of concept game.

Platforming here is excellent and there are some especially tricky and difficult parts. It takes a minute to get how the momentum works but once you get it down it feels really good to play. Of course the music is quite good and even though it's an early Genesis title there's some excellent music here.

The only downside of this game is that the levels are a little too long. This game makes you really grateful that they dropped the 3 act structure in Sonic 2. There's a lot of set pieces that are copy/pasted into the level at random so at times it feels like you've somehow looped back around.

Good, marble zone boring, music good

A pretty good start to an amazing franchise! If only Labyrinth Zone didn't exist.

classic blast processing, iconic green hill music

There's like one good level then just a bunch of banging music.
