Least favorite of the original 2D Sonic games, but it was the first and pretty much the prototype that SEGA improved on. You really learn to appreciate Spin Dash once you play this game, since its completely absent and you've got no method to hit max speed manually. Only levels I'd say were 'fun' were Green Hill and Star Light Zones. This game's special zone minigame is easily the roughest and cumbersome to navigate.

Uhhhhh it's got a neat speedrun??

That's all I've got. Sonic 1 neither has good level design nor capitalizes on its mechanics in any meaningful way. It is the developer's first step forward and understandably so but that first step isn't graceful or holds up well at all, unless you like incredibly intermittent slow periods that are more derivative of other platformers that came before it than actual tests of speed the game advertises, or dickish enemy placement that makes platforming more risk averse, or maybe you like dated music and 90s aesthetic, which is perfectly fine. If you enjoy those things cool, I think it really puts Sonic 1 into the slow and decrepit lane rather than the fast lane.

Marble Garden Zone is a terrible pace breaker and this is a fairly mediocre start to a series that gets so much better

They didn't really know how to make Sonic yet when they did this one. And they forgot how to make Sonic very shortly after figuring it out.

absolute classic for starting one of the most iconic and great franchises of all time but really not that good as a standalone game

Aqui foi onde tudo começou, mas não é o meu preferido.

Starts out with one of the best and most revolutionary first levels in video game history and proceeds to screw everything up from there. Ok maybe that's a bit harsh but it can't be overstated how great Green Hill is compared to the rest of the game.

A very solid and influential platformer, despite the strange battle its always having out with the Mario games for some reason. Sonic is always at its best when it is its most simple - get from A to B, as fast as you can if you want, and don't get involved with lame-ass side characters. Music is fantastic and Green Hill Zone is one of the most beautiful and iconic designs in video games.

Green Hill Zone was the only good zone in this entire game.

A classic that shows its age a bit. Fun to go back to but I see myself enjoying Sonic 2 and 3&K a lot more.

green hill was good. thats it.

I love all sonic games 2nd one was better

Music is fun....Sonic is 90s cool.....yeah that's about it this game kinda sucks

Could not get through this game. Sonic 2 is so much better it's not even funny

Not great but hey this one kinda had to be this way so the other classic sonic games could be as good as they are

People favor Sonic 2 heavily over Sonic 1, but I don't see much of a difference. This game deserves almost as much praise.

The weakest of the Genesis Sonic titles. Not having the spindash isn't a big deal, but the level design is nowhere near as polished as 2 or 3&K. Marble Zone is complete bs. (Gotta go fast? No! Ride on slow moving blocks over lava.)

Hasn't aged the best in comparison to the rest of the classics but still a step in the right direction for platformers. But play the ios verison for the best experience

alright hedgehogs can't talk but they sure are fat

I beat this game on an iPhone a few years ago when I needed games to play while I commuted to work. People love to give the Sonic franchise crap, and for understandable reason, but I legitimately enjoy the originals, and even if they're silly and poorly designed I've even gotten some enjoyment out of some newer ones. I would've definitely been a SNES kid but the Sonic games knew how to take advantage of the Genesis hardware for a great look and sound. The iOS version saves after you beat each level, and I'm pretty sure that's not how the original version worked, but on the other hand I was playing on a touch screen. Also I didn't get the chaos emeralds but I didn't care enough to do so.

It's not as good as Mario's best. There are plenty of great ideas and great style and the game is very good, but it's not as well designed as most Mario platformers. And the end is a bit anti-climactic after all the crap I had to go through to get there. But for the most part it still holds up as a great classic.

although i had an nes & have vague memories of playing mario & duck hunt for the first time, my parents bringing home a genesis & sonic the hedgehog is my first extremely clear video game memory. it was love at first sight for me. more than anything else, the sonic the hedgehog series is responsible for me being the gamer i am today.

and i didn't just stop at the games. i devoured the cartoons (tails gets tied up SO MUCH in adventures of sonic the hedgehog y'all, highkey formative for me tbh), the comic books, everything i could get my hands on.

i don't know how many times i beat this game, but i know plenty of those times were of the up/down/left/right /a+start variety, heh.

though this was surprassed pretty convincingly by its sequels, it still reminds me of when i fell in love with video games for the first time, and it still plays great. i love that dumb little blue speedster so much.

Music bops. Pixel Art is great. I just hate level design and the gameplay, so much.

i have a love and hate relationship with this game because who programmed spikes in this game and why does marble zone suck so much ass
