The main reason Darkstalkers is considered one of the best fighting game franchises.
THis title alone fro 1997 is able to compete with some of the best in the industry, including the beloved fighters released even today.
The amount of effort put into the presentatino alone is enough to sell you on this: it says a lot that the animations from this game are studied and used as examples in professional animation courses: the stile of Darkstalkers are straight up timeless, able to showcase an incredibly fast-pced combat smoothly, while also combining horror-themed brutality with hilarious Looney-Toons hijinks.
Each character is an homage to the classic representation of monsters in media (yes, even Felicia) but they are able to express so much personality in they expressions and moves that are able to result relevant to this day (seriously, every time I see Lord Raptor looking at Leilei or any of the trasformations and danc enumbers from supers like DImitri's or Lilith, I can't help but smile)
THe stages are also full of personality, so much that outshine environments from titles of so many other fighters, and able to convey joy, fun and also unsettlement.
Each match is able to make you release so much adrenaline and hype: you got ZERO pause between matches, you just go for it and try to pressure you opponent. It's so different to so many titles, where more methodical and "slower" approaches are often recommended.
For sure one of the best fighting games ever made. A must play even for people that are not fans of the genre.

i used to not get what people liked about this game. that was when i was worse at fighting games. revisiting it years later, it's one of my favourites of all time, and i think it does things better than many modern fgs. most importantly, it keeps an extremely brisk and anime-esque pace of matches while still having very strong focus and emphasis on neutral. i'd compare it to kof in this regard, which i also think does that quite well—but there's so many other charming aspects of this game that makes it incredible both competitively and casually, as well as a huge target for a potential sequel (even if they wouldn't be able to capture the magic entirely). great roster, great mechanics, great pacing, the only standout flaw is the character balance, which is true of basically any old fighting game.
the best darkstalkers game ever created-- and dare i say it stays as the best fighting game i've ever played. the stages are so unique and move in such beautiful ways, not to mention the incredible sprite animations for the time. the character selection is much more vast compared to other darkstalkers and still holds up exceptionally well! music is iconic and playing this then as a kid vs now still holds the same enjoyment, if not more.
