fiquei umas duas semanas pensando sobre o jogo depois de terminar... o jogo é bom ! personagens legais história interessante e não tem uma jogabilidade cansativa nem chata, você segue a história de boa, não é muito nem pouco, sabe? é um jogo na medida certa, tem muito RPG maker que ou parece que tá faltando pedaço ou você fica irritado querendo que acabe logo, esse não ! enfim ! yaoi e canibalismo ! só coisa boa !

i understand how ppl enjoy it, it's a fun problematic yaoi doujin game with a not very well done english translation [which i personally always find endearing] that already didnt have the best writing, or coding, but wonderful art and interesting character /ideas/. however it isnt very fleshed [pun slightly intended] out nor has really much to say. and that okay! just dont pretend its one of the best modern rpg maker stories to exist or pretend its saying something meaningful about well.... anything. its just a fun doujin game.

ok i decided to review this after having played it just a year ago because i just have so many thoughts on it despite my general distaste for it. this isn't a bash on zeno fans, this is just how i feel.
firstly, i'd like to talk positives: the gameplay. it is your general rpgmaker with an interactive narrative, exploration mechanics, and puzzles. but what really stands out that i don't really see in other rpgmakers is the random chase scenes. it was thrilling to randomly hear chase music and be chased by an assailant. while it was easy to avoid, simply by running into other rooms until the music died, it added to the horror aspect. and the puzzles were fun. that is all i can pretty much say about gameplay.
and now the story. i am very disappointed because the premise was so, interesting. there are so many things you can do with waking up handcuffed to someone and amnesia. it is straight and to the point. however, the story does not pick up until about the last half of the game. you're given hints through documents and reports hidden around the facility, detailing zeno as a disease characterized by bloodlust and cannibalizing others. while edgy, it is not a dealbreaker as i can see this being written well. near the end of the game, the sweet-natured, black-haired character has a complete and sudden change in personality; he becomes manic and murderous when his life is threatened by your blue-haired assailant. as you explore the second floor (you start from the bottom 5th floor, and are going up), you find out more about zeno. the more i read about it, the more it felt like there was not much research done on cannibalism at all from marutoku (i could talk prion diseases all day), but that is beside the point. it is entirely unexplained WHY one of the cures to zeno is eating another infected with zeno; it just does. if i were to cure a cold by eating the flesh of someone with a cold, it would simply make me sicker. it doesn't really make sense to me. in all honesty, i would have preferred it to be described as a parasite rather than "genetic disease." it would make more sense that a subject would have sudden urges to eat meat or partake in murder if something had taken over the brain. it is understandable that this disease is in progress of being researched, but the world building feels so lazy because there is lack of biological terminology to explain such things. every observation is more about what the disease is doing externally, rather than researching what was happening on a molecular level. it felt like these people were not allowed to own a microscope in the facility. there was little to no effort in the research to make this aspect of the story, the literal title and main plot, interesting.
while the main plot twist was fun, i don't think it was enough to carry the rest of the story.
now this part is just a personal peeve of mine. the other way to cure zeno is...to completely erase one's trauma. i know i shouldn't think too hard about this because it's a marutoku game, but trauma has to be written very carefully in order to be portrayed correctly. if this is how to cure zeno, then the implications are that zeno patients are trauma survivors. and trauma survivors are dangerous and violent. i am not saying marutoku meant to write this way about trauma survivors. i am saying it is sloppy, and it is insensitive just to throw trauma in for an emotional moment. the cure also sends the message that one should simply "forget" trauma and be over it to end violent tendencies. it was not written with care at all.
the main draw of the game came from the characters. the main two are handcuffed for a majority of the game, giving them plenty of time to interact with each other. however, their writing comes off as rather unsubtle. it felt like there was not enough time for these characters to get to know each other, gaining intimacy rather quickly. this is a normal aspect of marutoku games, i have noticed. these two are perfect opposites, one hotheaded and the other pleasant (but watch out! he's fucked up). it is almost trope-like how that works. a lot of lines between them are one-liner, "i will come back for you" kind of dialogue when things get dramatic. it felt like a dating sim almost, except you only had one character to romance. i have a sneaking suspicion that this writer wanted to write shounen ai in the form of a game but wanted to be dramatic about it.
i talked very negatively about this, i know. it wasn't a fantastic game, but it was fun overall. and as i prefaced at the beginning of this, i am not bashing zeno fans. i simply found this story badly written, and honestly just an excuse to write two men close to each other. ok have a great day everyone
firstly, i'd like to talk positives: the gameplay. it is your general rpgmaker with an interactive narrative, exploration mechanics, and puzzles. but what really stands out that i don't really see in other rpgmakers is the random chase scenes. it was thrilling to randomly hear chase music and be chased by an assailant. while it was easy to avoid, simply by running into other rooms until the music died, it added to the horror aspect. and the puzzles were fun. that is all i can pretty much say about gameplay.
and now the story. i am very disappointed because the premise was so, interesting. there are so many things you can do with waking up handcuffed to someone and amnesia. it is straight and to the point. however, the story does not pick up until about the last half of the game. you're given hints through documents and reports hidden around the facility, detailing zeno as a disease characterized by bloodlust and cannibalizing others. while edgy, it is not a dealbreaker as i can see this being written well. near the end of the game, the sweet-natured, black-haired character has a complete and sudden change in personality; he becomes manic and murderous when his life is threatened by your blue-haired assailant. as you explore the second floor (you start from the bottom 5th floor, and are going up), you find out more about zeno. the more i read about it, the more it felt like there was not much research done on cannibalism at all from marutoku (i could talk prion diseases all day), but that is beside the point. it is entirely unexplained WHY one of the cures to zeno is eating another infected with zeno; it just does. if i were to cure a cold by eating the flesh of someone with a cold, it would simply make me sicker. it doesn't really make sense to me. in all honesty, i would have preferred it to be described as a parasite rather than "genetic disease." it would make more sense that a subject would have sudden urges to eat meat or partake in murder if something had taken over the brain. it is understandable that this disease is in progress of being researched, but the world building feels so lazy because there is lack of biological terminology to explain such things. every observation is more about what the disease is doing externally, rather than researching what was happening on a molecular level. it felt like these people were not allowed to own a microscope in the facility. there was little to no effort in the research to make this aspect of the story, the literal title and main plot, interesting.
while the main plot twist was fun, i don't think it was enough to carry the rest of the story.
now this part is just a personal peeve of mine. the other way to cure zeno is...to completely erase one's trauma. i know i shouldn't think too hard about this because it's a marutoku game, but trauma has to be written very carefully in order to be portrayed correctly. if this is how to cure zeno, then the implications are that zeno patients are trauma survivors. and trauma survivors are dangerous and violent. i am not saying marutoku meant to write this way about trauma survivors. i am saying it is sloppy, and it is insensitive just to throw trauma in for an emotional moment. the cure also sends the message that one should simply "forget" trauma and be over it to end violent tendencies. it was not written with care at all.

i'm not a native english speaker, so excuse me for grammar mistakes, plus i pulled an all-nighter just to finish this game for the sake of learning how far this theatre of the absurd can go.
well..
i kinda liked the beginning: classic duo of a fiery hot-headed guy and a kind collected and kinda mysterious guy resulted in plenty of nice and funny interactions. i liked watching them goofing around near their stupid vending machine or them having to solve puzzles together due to them both being handcuffed. art is also quite nice.
but then, near the end, the plot started...rolled down the hill, flew out of the window. hoo boy. it is so bad, so overly dramatic and forced, i just couldn't take it seriously! this amount of cheesy attempts to create a drama between two people who knew each other for a few hours can work only on someone who is really into shipping pretty boys or people who didn't play a lot of well written games before (for example, Cell of Empireo - one of the best written rpg maker story-driven horror games).
but okay. just a short game about two boys and cannibalism illness (not the virus even), right?
but then i decided to go for true™ endings, and it became much more worse.
the thing is, the further you go, the more you notice how creator just stopped caring about writing at all. "are they just dropping random shit at this point?" - i was thinking.
you see, because you are, in fact, not the creator of these characters - you do not have the bond with them.. yet. it needs to be developed through the game's writing. that's not gonna happen here. when the story empathizes so much on an emotional aspect of it's characters, without knowing these characters well the impact of any emotional scene can be either dull or hilarious for the player. well, you can have some super ultra realistic abusive family portrayal or sibling cannibalism with kid calmly bleeding and romantically willing to die from their close one. maybe these shocking backstories will be impactful for someone, but i'm not that person. i felt like these "backstories" were thrown at the last second, and it felt like nothing more rather than an amateur's first story.
something like "i want to make a game about a disease which symptoms will completely satisfy my intense liking for cannibalism and crazy bloodlusted boys".
i guess if you're in search for the exact same things i described, you will be totally satisfied by this game. it's okay. i understand the appeal but i guess i am not the target audience. in any way, it was a good visual example of "how not to do an rpgmaker game story" for me personally, and at least some moments were fun.

I played this game because the art and story intrigued me. I was promised 2 men handcuffed together and cannibalism. As interesting as this premise is, the game doesn't really take it anywhere great.
I enjoyed the characters. Despite the translation flaws you can atleast get the hint of what their personalities are and their motives but you'll have to use your imagination to improve their dialogue. Also helps that they are very pretty.
There were some spooky moments. I'm scared easily so this probably isn't much of a horror for most people, but I liked the amount of tense moments and gore.
The plot concept and twists were good. Without spoiling, the general idea of the game is great. 2 people wake up handcuffed together (even though they technically don't :/) with no memories, and have to work together to find out what happened. There were a couple unexpected twists but after twist number 5 was explained to me in great detail it became repetitive.
Puzzles were ok.
An obvious negative is the English translation. It is definitely... an attempt. Thank you to whoever made it as it allowed me to play the game, but could really do with a redo.
The plot points about mental health and trauma linking to violence are rather poorly written and only promote a negative stigma.

It's a nice niche horror RPGM that's free, so if you're bored and looking for something to occupy a few hours I'd recommened it. If you want more gay try Dramatical Murder, and more cannibalism watch Tokyo Ghoul.

No começo estava achando legai até, as partes de perseguição me dão muito agonia, e achei algumas partes desnecessárias e tenho muito dificuldade em enigmas, mistérios e etc. Do meio pra parte final estava ficando chato ( e olha que o jogo é pequeno) e o 1 final que eu peguei foi muito ruim, joguei aquela parte denovo para ver outro final e foi pior ainda!?, O jogo se perdeu completamente e eu me perdi mais ainda
i was so diseased about this game for a while that i put up my playthrough, spedran this game, despite having issues with chase scenes. it's pretty alright though

My experience with this game was a bit tainted by the... less than ideal translation, but looking past that, I enjoyed the game and the characters a lot. Though the gameplay wasn't its strongest suit and I had to do it all through a guide, and also I got hit with a few bugs (one of which scared me into thinking i wouldn't be able to progress), I still enjoyed the playing experience.
One of my grievances is the amount of exposition about Zeno, like at some point I just wanted to go "...yes. We get it." because it was mostly all really repetitive and the new information gained was very minor. I can't really say anything about the dialogue, because once again, the translation itself is a bit wonky, but it felt unnatural at times. I'm sure it's better in the original language, however.
Even through all of that, I really did enjoy the characters a lot. A lot of moments tugged at my heartstrings, and some of the plot twists made my jaw drop irl, lmao.

I love RPGMs with all my heart, but this one felt... dull, so to speak. It's like your local intended horror RPGM, but the horror part does not deliver well. Even though the different floors and the vibes suit the themes perfectly, and even though there's a lot of effort and care put in CGs and sprites and such... the gameplay still feels empty and wacky to me. Same goes for the main plot points- as if it was forced and didn't make too much sense in the end. To put it simply and making this review spoiler-free, I feel like making the "two different states" as separate scenarios, not actually influencing the other, spoils the whole thing a lot. Their personalities seem slightly artificial because of that.
Puzzles are cool, though, and the exploration part matters a lot in order to get different endings, specially the ones actually telling you what's the game about.
I think I'm saying too many undeserved bad things about this game, but I'd say it's really enjoyable, so please try it! Let's wait for other games from the same author as well, they look sick!
