Pretty solid Tennis game, but it's not much beyond that. There are a few additional modes, but none give the game all that much more replay value than the basic Tennis gameplay. The tennis is very well executed and very fun, it's just very limited in replay value and variety. Growing up, it was not a multiplayer favorite for my family, so I mostly played it alone.
I've been just casually playing this game before bed on NSO and it's fineeee. I beat all the cups, singles and doubles. I think that when you're back is facing the camera, you're opponent is braindead, but when theirs is facing the camera watch out cause Serena Williams just grabbed the controller and she's pissed.
I've written about the Legacy vs. Quality debate before, but Mario Tennis wrinkles the conversation further.
Is this a solid tennis game? Yes.
Is it incredible? No.
Are other tennis games much better in terms of gameplay? Yes.
But DID THOSE GAMES GIVE US WALUIGI.
NO.
NO THEY DID NOT.
In my heart, I want to give this a 5. But really, I just want to give Waluigi every perfect score imaginable.
Mario Tennis was a ton of fun when it first released (and was my most-rented game from Blockbuster), but nothing special now. Waluigi, on the other hand, is forever great.
I know people have made Waluigi hype into a meme, but I've legitimately mained him in every game he's appeared in since 2000. Wah for life.
