This is how you do a remake the right way. Immaculately designed environments with brilliant ui choices (I love the map and how it shows you exactly what rooms you have cleared and where items are, saving you the hassle of having to run around aimlessly looking for ammo and key items). The mood is perfect, with the lighting really creating a sense of dread as you wander down dark hallways or rush through the mansion trying to escape the Tyrant.
Speaking of Tyrant, the way they introduce him is perfect. Letting you learn the layout of the map before throwing your sense of comfort out the window by introducing someone who will chase you down is a good way to shake things up, and I was genuinely scared of mr x througout the game.
I have been a resident evil fan my whole life, and I love the last few games they have put out. Happy to see them pulling out of their nose dive after the atrocity that was resi 6.

In the days of AAA developers steering away from single player games, in favor of online multiplayer Destiny clones, one developer listened to their fans and delivered a refreshing take on the classic Playstation game, Resident Evil 2, only 24 months after delivering a refreshing sequel (Resident Evil VII) to a close to dead franchise.
Resident Evil franchise was all but dead. Resident Evil 5
wasn’t really a Resident Evil game (More action than Survival horror). Resident Evil 6
was worse. Resident Evil Revelations 2 was a step in the right direction, but Capcom is starting to really shine and get some momentum with their releases in terms of quality, performance and surprises.
This is the scariest game I’ve ever played period. And the game isn’t filled with dozens of jump scares like Outlast. Resident Evil 2 REmake is legitimately filled with dread, that can probably single handedly be pointed to the re-arrival of Mr X., who stalks you throughout the game, wherever you go. It’s brilliant and it keeps you guessing throughout your playthroughs with Leon and Claire.
Players who have experienced the 1998 original, will be happy to know that although Point A and Point Z might be similar, playing through the game points B, C, D, E, F, G........W, X, Y, are completely different. The puzzles are different. The interaction with NPCs are different. Ada Wong and Sheri are handled differently. And there’s just enough surprises to keep the pacing good and the fear great.

The game genuinely made me terrified in my first run thanks to Mr X, something few games have managed to achieve these days.
It's a short game that survives solely off replays. I ended up doing 7 playthroughs and got the plat, and I still didn't manage to actually 100% the games in-game objectives. It does get a little stale doing it that many times in a row however, and certain lines that always come out can get grating (Hearing that guy shouting for help near the beginning of the game comes to mind)
I love how many quality of life stuff there is in the game. Having an in-game map that shows when you've collected everything in a room is just pure bliss. Having the ability to combine herbs and gunpowder even when your inventory is full avoids backtracking.
The objectives, for those who want to complete all of them (I ended up doing 74/87) can provide either extra challenges, or brand new ways to play. Doing a no item box challenge in particular was the run I found to be a huge breath of fresh air as it changed my gameplay style completely.
There are a couple of extra modes. 4th survivor which came out with the game is like a more arcadey type game where you have to get from point A to point B with only the resources on you. I actually found this to be harder than both of my hardcore playthroughs. That unlocks more and more variants of the same mode, which I wasn't in a hurry to play.
There's also some DLC stuff, which seems to take an hour according to youtube videos. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'll probably at least give it a shot, even though I'm dying to move onto another game after playing through this one so many times.
So overall great game, survival horror at its scariest. Replay-ability is high, but also relies on it far too much.

Basically everything you'd want from a remake. Gorgeous, and with tonnes of quality of life improvements, but still true to that survival horror experience. New enough to feel like a brand new title when it was released; true enough to source to keep hardcores happy. That is an impossibly tight line to walk; but they did it.
I was having a lot of fun with this game until I got out of the police station and into the sewers. I have literally never heard anyone say one fucking word positive or negative about any part of this game past the police station, and therefore I assume that literally everybody else did the same thing.
