Being a fan of both classic TR and the reboot series, this game left me very conflicted. I think Eidos did a better job at giving us a "true" Tomb Raider experience than CD, focusing less in combat and more in exploration, platforming and puzzles. that's great. however, i found the story to be weak and considerably worse that the first two in the trilogy. the game starts really strong but there are lots of problems along the way and some design choices really hurt the narrative. I'm so tired of these RPG elements and AAA tropes being in almost every story-driven singleplayer game nowadays, for no reason other than having more "content". it does not make things better and harms the dynamic and pacing of the story SO MUCH, it's a real shame. upgrades, skill trees, hub worlds and side quests don't belong in a tomb raider game. i'm totally okay with TR not being that mainstream anymore tbh, we don't need all that stuff.

Back to the story, apart from some stale moments the plot is still interesting and engaging, until it becomes really disappointing and predictable after they killed off an important character middle of the game, it makes no sense and the ending is weaker because of it. and don't get me started about the white savior stuff because yeah, that happens. the villain was ok with a cool final fight, but the end could have been so much more satisfying. i still don't know what Jonah is doing in these games, his solely reason to exist is that Lara can have a friend. he has zero character. I recognise the effort to make him a bit more of a character this time but it ended up being too superficial. remember Sam from the first game? yeah, she was nice.

Now that this trilogy is over I hope we can have a bolder tomb raider game in the near future that isn't so concerned about telling the origin story of Lara Croft because, really, we never needed that.

Third time is (kinda?) the charm.

Looks like this one followed the consistently improving pattern of the previous two reboot series games. We're finally left with a game that I can fully get behind. It's still heavily flawed and nowhere near the peaks of the series from before but I'll take what I can get at this point.

The general feeling was finally nailed (this has the most Tomb Raider feeling any of the games have had since Underworld) but the gameplay feels a bit uncharacteristically off. You have these huge ass skill trees, one of the branches giving you combat abilities but there's barely any opportunities to use them. Don't get me wrong, the decrease in combat focus is greatly appreciated on my end but why did they even bother? Beyond this, the platforming also takes a hit this go around. I already dislike the sticky ledge/gliding through the air platforming style of this iteration of the series and the Uncharted games but there's the extra layer of inconsistent mechanics this time. The grapple axe was an absolute shit show in terms of execution and it felt like it only worked half of the time. Not much more of an annoyance on the regular difficulties with constant checkpoints but when a difficulty like Deadly Obsession exists (saves at campfires only, sometimes campfires are 40+ minutes apart) it needs to be better.

Can't help but wish this had more time or budget (both?). There's a very solid framework to be found but it doesn't fully deliver on anything. Having said that, it's a better effort than the previous two games regardless. If the series isn't dead, I hope Eidos Montreal gets another go at it. Perhaps next time as the sole developer. Crystal Dynamics hasn't been slaying things exactly...

A good end to a criminally underrated reboot trilogy. I hope we see more Tomb Raider soon.

A powerful finale to Lara Croft's origin trilogy. Great story, challenging puzzles and a beautiful world to explore.

Story, Grafik, Sound und Synchro Top! Wem die Vorgänger gefallen hat, wird hier auch seinen Spass mit haben.

The worst of the reboots.

The gameplay and graphics (somehow?) are massive downgrades from rise.

The story is literally just a retread of rise too, everything that is explored in this game was explored in rise - just not in such a melodramatic manner.

Disappointing finale to a decent string of games.

This game was solid - my least fave of the reboots, Lara is my girlfriend

Shadow of the Tomb Raider gets closer to hitting the story high notes of the first in the rebooted series, but honestly at this point I'm just playing these because they are fun as hell, rather than any investment in the narrative.

English/German Below BEWARE OF SPOILERS!

I played through the game after almost 37 hours and got 83/99 achievements (1590/1690 achievement points), including 100% success. Except for the time and point attack modes, I've completely exhausted the game. I also played all of the Graves DLC.

story

Overall, in terms of storytelling, I really liked the game towards the end, because at the beginning I thought this apocalyptic scenario would be too strained. I especially liked the hidden city and everything around it. The story is casually nicely expanded by the many collectibles and everything gets more substance similar to the part before.

The DLC graves also come with their own stories or fit well into the story and give Amaru in particular more background. Because Amaru was the biggest weakness for me, because he simply had too little screen time and therefore has far too little to offer as a character. As I said with some DLC graves it gets more profile but overall it could have been represented better. Trinity also came up short on the surface.
Furthermore, I would have liked a longer change of scenery in this part as well.

What I really have to praise are the parts that are supposed to slow down the game a bit. I like it very much and give Lara and the player a break themselves.

I also always find it super interesting in games when they deal with gods etc. and integrate them into the game (e.g. Ah Puch, Cabrakan etc. by the way, the grave of Hun Batz from the DLC is pretty cool).

Gameplay

I really liked the scope of the game as well as some of the new features. Shadow of the Tomb Raider feels really like a classic Tomb Raider on the PC. In addition, there is New Game + and the aforementioned point u. Time mode.

The classic Tomb Raider feeling begins with the graves, some of which are breathtaking and both tricky and require skill (especially the DLC graves often rely on skill passages). I also liked the crypts, which are often associated with side quests, and contribute to the really good worldbuilding. The monoliths are now connected with puzzles, which made them even more interesting, even if in the end mostly only Mats jumped out.

The skill and upgrade system works well and I really liked the look of the skill sheet. Individual skins look very good and also give e.g. good upgrades in the area of faster leveling.

As already mentioned, the collectibles gave me a lot of fun again and were incredibly motivated, so collecting tasks like this have to be integrated. The challenges were fun too, even if they didn't really live up to their name (mostly the challenge was finding them).

When it comes to climbing, too, you have to think about something and, for example, integrated overhang climbing. Overall, as in the previous parts, the climbing felt good, even if countless deaths resulted from falls (mostly because I wanted to continue too quickly).

Graphics / staging

Bombastic. Probably one of the nicest games I've played so far. The background, the individual characters and the whole game are staged fantastically. The jungle just looks amazing and is filled with some animals etc. Atmospherically it is completely correct, the sounds of the animals are also implemented very well (howler monkeys: D).

In addition, the tombs and crypts give you a wonderful Tomb Raider feeling.

Some pictures, moments or video sequences (e.g. jaguar scene or a certain scene in which Lara climbs out of the water, with the right skin the scene is goat) are simply incredibly well staged and astonish you.

Conclusion

I had 37 hours of real fun here and played an incredibly good Croft trilogy overall. The game does almost everything right for me and has entertained me very well. Ultimately, Lara's last appearance gets 4.5/5 treasures.

---------------------------------german-------------------------------

This new Tomb Raider series has taken quite some time to build Lara up to her mythical pre-reboot status. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the trilogy-ender in this new series, aims to be that title that completes her arc from Bookshelf Raider to a legitimate Tomb Raider. While the game slowly reverts back to a standard, swashbuckling adventure by the midway point, it starts out as a promising, nuanced look at Lara and the treasure-hunting genre.

A great end to the trilogy. Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider are also both great games. This definitely needs to be on your wishlist/backlog

I'm a huge Tomb Raider fan, but a critic of the reboot games, they have a lot of fundamental problems, however I was pleasantly surprised with this one, It's the best Tomb Raider of the reboot series. Really enjoyed the lack of combat and how exploration and platforming are now the basis of the experience. Gorgeous visuals, great voice acting and a nice background lore of the narrative, however the main story itself was still too generic.

I liked it, I think Eidos Montreal understands better this series than Crystal Dynamics, would like to see a full game thought out by them.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider? More like shadow of its former self Raider

There is an amazing Tomb Raider game in here held down by being made to adhere to AAA tropes.

Pretty game, with an unfortunately boring overarching plot. Some set pieces are quite nice and the effort put into historical accuracy is obvious throughout the whole game. Combat is lackluster and exploration is uninteresting.

Feels like a half-baked uncharted game at times with very simple puzzle design. Completing optional tombs and crypts is mostly just for the sake of experiencing the design of these areas, as the rewards for completing this optional content are mostly useless blueprints for costumes for Lara that you still need to craft anyways. Different outfits have various combat or collection bonuses but in all honesty they didn't provide enough variety to the core gameplay for me to want to experiment with anything beyond the default outfit.

Overall I would recommend buying this game on sale to series fans or people looking for something in a similar vein to the uncharted games, otherwise you may find yourself getting bored quickly.

Absolutely nothing inherently wrong with it, but in the current climate of games, a Metroid Vania like this suffers from the fact that if you stop playing and you come back to it, good luck getting anywhere because I forgot every puzzle and ability lara had learned and there was no fucking way I was restarting it all.

I beat this like the week it came out and really liked many aspects of it, but decided to wait until all the DLC was out before I played it. So here we were, some like 8 months later, and I remembered zero about this games story (that I remembered liking!) or mechanics or anything else about it. So heres a brief bulletpoint list of what I remember, 2 days later, about all 7 DLC packs.

THE FORGE: bunch of lava, didnt make sense

THE PILLAR: no recollection

THE NIGHTMARE: kinda tropey but still pretty ok

THE PRICE OF SURVIVAL: no recollection

THE SERPANTS HEART: No recollection

THE GRAND CAIMAN: difficult!

THE PATH HOME: eh.

the main campaign didnt have a lot of combat so I guess these picked up the slack a bit, and I disliked that. I also disliked how it gave you like 18 new outfits but most of the DLC took place in the area of the map where you had to wear the Maya gear or whatever.

idk. Regret this preorder. least its off the hard drive now

Drinking game: Take a shot every tame Lara says “Joerrrnahhhh”

I have fond memories of the previous two games in this trilogy, so I was looking forward to finally playing the conclusion. I figured I’d play it now since I just played the Uncharted series and the Tomb Raider reboots take a lot of elements from those games. All that did for me, however, was highlight Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s flaws.

To start, the story in this game is pretty bad. And not just the story, but specifically the dialogue and line delivery too. I remember the past two games having pretty mediocre stories as well, but they felt passable enough to justify the action, and the dialogue was decent enough to make me care somewhat for the characters. Shadow though has some laughably bad cutscenes. The actors often feel like they’re over-acting and the game takes it self far too seriously for how mediocre the story is. I couldn’t bring myself to care about any part of the story in this game, even though it’s the third game in the trilogy and I’ve been with this world for two games now. There’s also very little setup and payoff. There are some pretty cool moments in this game, but none of them feel earned. Certain character beats felt like they came out of nowhere. There were parts where I thought “ok damn maybe this game is heating up”, but then it didn’t keep that momentum and it just ended up feeling underwhelming. I almost fell asleep multiple times playing this game.

The combat in all three of the Tomb Raider reboots isn’t very good, and I didn’t feel much improvement, if any, in this entry. It feels pretty clunky and unexciting to control. I never thought I’d praise the combat from the first three Uncharted games, but it feels much smoother and easier to control there. The stealth in Shadow feels pretty guerrilla at times which is cool. The ability to rub mud over yourself as a disguise and sneak through bushes and mud covered walls made me feel pretty badass.

The platforming feels kind of clunky and annoying. During some cool action-platforming set pieces, I found myself dying often over a cheap death from a jump I should have landed, which completely killed the action and made some of these sections very tedious to get through. When they worked though, the action set pieces looked nice. The graphics aren’t anything to brag about, but they got the job done. They look a bit dated on PS4 for 2018, but they aren’t that bad. There are some really pretty environments to explore, and the art design overall is good. The game had some performance issues in the hub area where the frame rate would chug a bit, but it was a relatively smooth 30fps for most of the game.

This and the last game feature a semi-open world design that does nothing for the gameplay. Most of the side quests offered are meaningless filler. These games could benefit from a more linear approach. Streamline the game, but still have certain larger areas to explore with branching paths that lead to challenge tombs, without all the other fluff. Remove all the side quests and hordes of collectibles bogging down the menu. I feel like they made both this and the previous game semi-open world just for the sake of making it bigger. It feels hollow and uninspiring.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn’t do much to set itself apart from its predecessor. It does almost nothing new that’s notable. This would have been OK if the world and story had been as interesting as Rise of the Tomb Raider, but it’s not. I would only recommend this to fans of the past Tomb Raider games who want more of the same.

This game is really bad? Yes, but look at those Lara's arms! I will give a 5 just because of that.

All you mud enthusiasts will be itching for this one

Probably my favorite game of the reboot franchise. Compared to the first two, this one had more of a focus on exploration/open-world elements and less on linear combat sequences, which I liked. There isn't much in the way of new mechanics, but just felt like the most polished game.

However, its still unfortunately a pretty average game as a whole. The story is pretty dumb as usual, side quests are mostly filler, combat gets repetitive quickly, climbing controls are still pretty bad. The tomb puzzles and big action setpieces are definitely the highlights, but still weren't super engaging.

I only played all three because I have a weird obsession with archery games. Play this if you liked the first two, otherwise your time is probably better spent elsewhere.

The storyline is hot garbage, but man do I love playing these games.

I found it a bit monotonous and boring compared to the other 2 but it is still very good and the graphics are more incredible than ever.

It was kinda enjoyable, but overall rather forgettable, similarly to the second TR. Definitely too many swimming segments and how they managed to add stealth sections to them is beyond me. There was a good premise in the story, but the execution was rather meh.
