I think in the flurry of people joking about this series both ironically and unironically, and its infamy as THE cool math game of all time, we forget the really good design that actually went into it. The fact that dying immediately sends you back to the start of the level is really taken for granted, because there are some games that just have atrociously long death cutscenes, and then menus that pop up, and then you have to wait for it to load so you can try again... plus the music is bangin and the aliens are cute.
